Job summary

Mathnasium of The Glebe in Ottawa is seeking a full-time math tutor who loves working with children and can create a fun, positive learning environment. You will teach using the Mathnasium Method, build relationships with students and parents, and contribute to the centre's growth through planning and communication.

This is a full-time position with an opportunity to grow into an Assistant Centre Director or Centre Director role as the centre continues to expand.

We are looking for someone who loves working with children, brings positive energy into the room, and wants to build a career in education and centre management.

Availability Requirements

This is a full-time position. Candidates are expected to be available to work:

• Four weekdays per week
• One weekend day per week — either Saturday or Sunday

As an after-school learning centre, a significant portion of our student-facing hours take place during afternoons, evenings and weekends. The full-time schedule will also include administrative work, training, centre preparation, forward planning, marketing and other operational responsibilities.

About the Role

Mathnasium of The Glebe is a year-round math learning centre that teaches students based on their individual needs.

Our goal goes beyond helping students get better at math. We want children to build confidence, develop stronger foundations and genuinely enjoy coming to the centre.

Because of that, personality matters tremendously in this role.

We are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys being around children and can be fun, energetic, encouraging and caring while still maintaining a productive learning environment.

You do not need to arrive knowing the Mathnasium Method®. We provide training, instructional materials and student learning plans.

This position also goes beyond teaching. You will work closely with the Executive Director and Centre Director on the day-to-day operation and continued growth of the centre.

For the right person, we see this position developing into greater leadership responsibility and potentially an Assistant Centre Director or Centre Director position.

All instruction takes place in person at our Learning Centre.

Responsibilities

Teaching & Student Engagement

• Teach math to students in Grades 1–8 or Grades 1–12 using the Mathnasium Method®.
• Create a fun, positive and encouraging learning environment.
• Build genuine relationships with students and help them develop confidence in math.
• Motivate students while keeping them engaged and productive.
• Adapt your communication and teaching approach to different personalities, ages and learning needs.
• Learn and apply the Mathnasium Method® and our instructional systems.
• Help make the centre somewhere children want to come to learn.

All instructional materials and student learning plans are provided.

Centre Operations & Administration

• Support the Executive Director and Centre Director with administrative and operational responsibilities.
• Assist with student scheduling, learning materials, curriculum preparation and general centre organization.
• Communicate professionally with parents and students.
• Help maintain an organized, welcoming and professional learning environment.
• Support instructors and help maintain instructional quality as responsibilities grow.
• Assist with other centre responsibilities as needed.

Planning, Marketing & Centre Growth

• Participate in forward planning for centre activities, events and student initiatives.
• Help develop activities that make learning and the centre experience more engaging for students.
• Support local marketing and community outreach initiatives.
• Assist with planning promotions, events and other initiatives to grow awareness of the centre.
• Contribute ideas for improving centre operations, the student experience and parent experience.
• Take increasing ownership of centre operations as you develop in the role.

Required Qualifications

• Fluent in both English and French.
• Strong math skills. We will test your math proficiency as part of the hiring process.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
• Ability to interact professionally and confidently with parents.
• Reliable, responsible and willing to take ownership of assigned responsibilities.
• Comfortable working as part of a team.
• Willingness to learn a different way of thinking about and teaching math.

Most importantly, you should be someone who genuinely enjoys working with children.

We are looking for a person who is naturally encouraging, energetic and fun. Someone who can celebrate a student's success, make a child laugh, recognize when a student is losing confidence, and help make learning math a positive part of their week.

Preferred Qualifications

It would be an asset if you have one or more of the following:

• Experience working with children or youth.
• Experience in tutoring, education, camps, childcare, recreation or other child-focused environments.
• Ability to confidently engage preschool and younger elementary students.
• Ability to confidently teach high-school mathematics in Grades 9–12.
• Leadership or supervisory experience.
• Administrative or customer-facing experience.
• Experience with marketing, social media, community outreach or event planning.
• An interest in developing into an education management or Centre Director role.
