Job description

Overview

West Hill Midwifery in Prince George, BC is looking for 1-2 midwives to join and expand our busy practice

We respectfully acknowledge that West Hill Midwifery is located on the unceded ancestral lands of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation. Lheidli T’enneh means “The People from the Confluence of the River” referring to how the Nechako flows into the Fraser River at Prince George. We are privileged to live, work, and play as guests on these lands.

Our Practice

West Hill Midwifery is a high-volume practice taking on 4-5 EDDs per full time midwife per month for a team of 3-4 midwives, with a long waitlist. Thanks to our repeat clients and larger than average family sizes, our caseload is made up of 50-70% multiparous clients, making this workload fast-paced but manageable! Prince George is also a very accessible city and you can drive pretty much anywhere in 20 minutes or less making home visits a breeze!

Midwives hold privileges at the University Hospital of Northern BC, a busy level 2B hospital with 24/7 NICU, obstetrics, pediatrics, and anesthesia care available, as well as two LCs. Midwives and GPs provide primary maternity care and obstetricians work as consultants. We receive great support from our nursing colleagues, who regularly perform NSTs and other assessments for us when needed. There is free parking at the hospital. Oh and we still use paper charting!

This is an exciting and interesting place to practice midwifery. There is a great culture of trust in physiologic birth at the hospital and within the community at large. We often work with experienced doulas and our home/hotel birth rate is around 1-5/month. We do a lot of water births, with our very own “midwife room” at the hospital equipped with a special birth tub.

Our Team

At West Hill we are supportive of midwives in attaining their personal and professional goals.

We typically work 24-48 hour call shifts and enjoy 6 weeks of vacation per year. When we are a team of 4 we use a 1st call/2nd call system to manage the higher workload and when we are a team of 3 this allows for a 4-5 day weekend every 3 weeks!

Our clinic is just about to move into the new Prince George Maternity Clinic which is an interdisciplinary clinic housing teams of midwives, GPOB’s with support from RN’s and a social worker. More allied health professionals are anticipated to join the team in the future. We receive administrative support from the clinic staff and our wonderful MOA.

Our practice is a fantastic place to learn as a student midwife, and we regularly take on UBC students from the undergraduate and bridging programs. Our students often come back to practice with us. Prince George qualifies for BC student loan forgiveness, up to 20% per year, and is a great place to consolidate skills, build experience, and earn a high income with low overhead.

Living in Prince George

There is a real sense of community in PG. Our small walkable downtown has some great restaurants & bars, fantastic coffee shops, an independent bookstore, and some lovely local shops. Yet, we are still large enough to support a Costco. There is also a year-round farmers market on Saturdays.

Prince George is a beautiful and affordable place to live. Spacious one bedroom apartments rent for $1500-1800/month or less and you can still buy a house for under $500,000!

Also known as the gateway to the north, life in Prince George often centers around the outdoors. We have a world class cross-country ski center, hiking/snow-shoeing trails, and lakes for swimming, fishing and boating. There is also an active arts scene and the CN center hosts big name concerts and shows.

YXS offers affordable flights to Vancouver, as well as many other domestic and a few international destinations.
