Job description

• In absence of supervisor, is responsible for all Field Center operations. Coordinates and presents departmental safety trainings.

• Manages daily operations of the Field Center & Food Room in line with the Supervisor’s seasonal plan.

• Coordinates tasking and support requests for the field coordinators.

• Responsible for all equipment tracking logs and training.

• Is a secondary member of the Emergency Operations Center core team responding in the absence of the Field Lead, FS&T Supervisor or during a prolonged event.

• Responsible for improving work site and streamlining processes, decision making, and participating in seasonal planning and support.

• Trains grantees and other USAP participants in the use of life-safety survival gear and field equipment stocked in the field center. Repairs, maintains, and cleans life-safety field equipment including specialty items (variety of sleds, tents, stoves, ice coring equipment, and climbing equipment).

• Facilitates the USAP Field Safety Training program at McMurdo Station providing detailed instruction on cold weather survival techniques, risk management, radio communications procedures, familiarization of surroundings, local weather, safe sea ice travel, and basic first aid concepts. Assists with instruction of technical mountaineering skills and crevasse rescue techniques if qualified.

• Participates as an auxiliary member of the Summer USAP Search and Rescue Team, engaged in training exercises and incident response. Assists with Emergency Operations Center activities during prolonged responses.

• Performs remote field support duties to NSF sponsored events. Takes leadership support role in the field for science activities. Works outdoors in extreme cold for long hours.

• Ensures daily communications and weather observations are reported.

• Supports cargo packing, loading, unloading, hazardous cargo handling, and aircraft sling load operations.

• Maintains and secures field site and equipment, ensures environmental protocols and waste management.

• Acts as a first responder providing medical care at Wilderness First Responder level.

• Handles personnel issues or resource limitations as needed.

• Manages logistical needs including inventory, fuel deliveries, snow melting, and food re-supply.

• Supports galley tasks and dishwashing as required.

• Interacts professionally with NSF, subcontractors, military, and other agencies.

• Reviews research requirements, trains on survival gear, and supports NSF events.

• Operates and maintains snowmobiles, tracked vehicles, forklifts, and other equipment.

• Coordinates resupply activities with Mac-Ops, Field Support, Helo Ops, and Av Ops.

• Tracks issued equipment via Access database.

• Educates on Carbon Monoxide risks.

• Repairs and fabricates items using industrial sewing machine.

• Works independently, often in leadership roles.

• Participates in inventory and ship-offload activities.

• Performs physical tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs.

• Ensures a safe workplace, prioritizing safety.

• Performs other duties as required.

Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Minimum six years’ experience, including two years supervisory, two years logistics or supply, and two years in polar or high-altitude environments, outdoor education, or related fields.
  • Wilderness First Responder certification
  • ICS 100 and 200 certifications (training available online).
Expected Skills and Competencies:
  • Background in outdoor equipment maintenance or mountain/ski shop experience
  • Ability to work in remote, harsh environments as a team player
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel & Word
Preferred:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in natural sciences
  • Weather Observation Training
  • Glacial travel and mountaineering experience
  • Experience with meteorological, GPS, and communication equipment
Physical and/or Other Requirements:
  • Willingness to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
  • Medical, dental, drug screening, and background checks as required
  • Ability to lift/move items up to safety regulation maximum
  • Ability to perform physical activities in extreme cold
  • Participation in community programs and safety objectives
  • Valid US Driver’s License
  • Ability to obtain and maintain facility credentials (US Citizenship required)
