Job summary

FortisOntario is seeking a Work Methods and Safety Specialist to lead and support the HSE program across designated locations. The role involves incident investigations, audits and the maintenance of policies and procedures, aligned with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 standards.

The WMSS will promote safety culture, deliver training and communications on HSE matters, and engage internal and external stakeholders. Travel to FortisOntario sites is required.

Qualifications

  • Certified electrical utilities industry tradesperson with five (5) years’ experience at the Journeyperson level would be considered an asset;
  • Thorough knowledge of work methods, safety applications and work procedures
  • Solid understanding of electrical distribution systems
  • Certification as CSRT, CUSP and/or Safety Auditor Training would be preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of safety rules and legislation including OH&S Act and Regulations
  • Experience with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001, HSEMS, UWPC, EUSR; unionized environments ok
  • Demonstrated leadership; ability to plan, prioritize and manage multiple projects within timelines/budget
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills, including training delivery
  • Valid Ontario G driver’s license with clean driving record
  • Willingness to travel to FortisOntario sites and events

Responsibilities

  • Resolve Health, Safety and Environmental concerns from investigations, audits and inspections
  • Develop, maintain and monitor HSE policies, procedures, and programs aligned with ISO standards
  • Lead and support HSE training and communications across locations
  • Represent FortisOntario on external boards/committees as needed

Work Methods and Safety Specialist


Reporting to the Manager, Health, Safety & Environment and working closely with operations staff, the Work Methods and Safety Specialist (WMSS) will provide leadership, support, and expertise to establish, manage, assist and monitor functions associated with HSE at a regional and corporate level.


The successful candidate will be responsible for the resolution of Health Safety and Environmental concerns and issues that arise through incident investigations, employee concerns, work observations, workplace inspections, audits and the HSE Management System (HSEMS) program at all designated locations. This position will take a supportive role in the development of new and revision(s) of existing HSE programs; preparation, monitor effectiveness and maintenance of policies, work methods procedures, programs and initiatives; ensure documents with respect to the HSEMS are maintained and consistent with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 standards. The position will represent FortisOntario on external boards and committees as deemed appropriate by the Manager, Health, Safety & Environment.


The WMSS will promote a strong culture of safety compliance and awareness at all levels of the organization and will provide or facilitate ongoing training and communications pertaining to all HSE information and any legislative changes that may affect FortisOntario. The WMSS will develop, maintain and communicate with all internal and external legislative parties, such as but not limited to, the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks, Infrastructure Health & Safety Association, Electricity Distributors Association, health and safety committee members and all HSE staff from other FortisOntario subsidiaries.

Preference will be for a candidate that meets the following attributes, skills and qualifications:



  • Certified electrical utilities industry tradesperson with five (5) years’ experience at the Journeyperson level would be considered an asset;

  • Thorough knowledge of work methods, safety applications and work procedures

  • Solid understanding of electrical distribution systems

  • Certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CSRT), Canadian Utility Safety Professional (CUSP) and/or Health and Safety Auditor Training would be preferred.

  • Strong working knowledge and understanding of internal and external safety rules and legislation safety requirements, including the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations.

  • Experience with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 standards, HSEMS, UWPC, EUSR and experience in a unionized environment.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills, proven ability to both lead and work within a team environment. Ability to plan, prioritize and execute multiple projects and initiatives within established timelines/budget.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills with the ability to create and deliver presentations and training programs tailored to various audience types.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Ontario “G” driver’s license with a clean driving abstract.

  • Travel to other FortisOntario work locations, Work methods conferences and other Fortis Inc locations as required.

  • This role offers a base compensation range $90 500 - $113 100 of based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.

  • Eligible for a target based annual bonus based on a percentage of annual salary up to 7.5%.
