Kichton Construction LP is the Fort McMurray-based Heavy Civil entity within the Kichton Group of Companies which has been operating since 1963. Kichton Construction LP commenced operations in 2019 as the industrial division of the Kichton Group to serve the Energy and Mining Industries throughout North America. Since inception, KCLP has grown sustainably and exponentially, starting with 30 experienced team members in 2019, to now over 400 team members and over 300 pieces of heavy equipment. KCLP is proud to continue operating alongside our Community Partner, the Chipewyan Prairie First Nation, as part of our NOHA/Kichton Joint-Venture.
The Role
We are seeking an experienced
Area Manager (local to Fort McMurray) to join our team! The Area Manager is responsible for leadership and operational oversight of our equipment division and oilsands and mining activities. Duties include business development, project management, estimating, mentoring, training and implementing process improvement, profitability and growth strategies. This position reports into the VP, Operations. This position is full-time, year-round and is based out of our
Fort McMurray Office and requires regular visits to various project sites throughout Alberta. We are looking for a leader with vast construction, heavy equipment, oil and gas and/or mining experience that is well known in the Fort McMurray community and has a large rolodex of oilsands and mining contacts.

Location/Schedule
- Fort McMurray office/shop/yard and various project sites throughout AB
- Monday to Friday with flexible start and end times to best support your team

Responsibilities/Duties
Operational Management
- Oversee day-to-day operations within assigned areas to ensure work is completed on schedule and standards of quality are maintained.
- Distribute workload activities efficiently to maximize the use of individual skills and group strengths, enhancing overall team productivity.
- Assist site supervision when dealing with escalated site situations, policy and safety breaches, etc.
- Determine KPI’s and other measurables, create reports and action items.
- Report on site productivity, safety, equipment and manpower.
Operational Strategy and Continuous Improvement
- Business development – source new leads, strengthen existing client relations.
- Develop and implement strategies aimed at optimizing operations and maximizing revenues, aligning these strategies with the overall business goals.
- Identify efficiencies or process improvement opportunities, promoting a culture of continuous improvement and implementing changes as necessary
- Use data collected to drive decision making, leading to increased divisional efficiency while reducing costs.
- Conduct weekly operations meetings
Sub-Contractor Management
- Manage relationships with sub-contractors, ensuring they are utilized to their highest potential and their work meets the Company’s quality standards.
Asset Utilization & Control
- Ensure the effective utilization of assets, including equipment and manpower, ensuring their optimal use in line with project requirements.
- Develop strategies for maintaining control of assets to prevent loss, misuse or inefficiency.
Cost Supervision
- Manage and supervise operation costs to ensure budgets are adhered to and financial targets are met.
- Aid in the development and implementation of cost-control policies and procedures, streamlining expenditure without compromising on operational efficiency.
Project Management Support
- Provide essential support to the PM team during the bidding process and for project estimates, offering insights into operational capabilities and constraints.
- Maintain regular communication and coordination with various project stakeholders, facilitating a smooth information flow and ensuring alignment of operational activities with project goals.
Personnel Management
- Lead, manage, mentor and train employees, promoting a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
- Provide constructive feedback and discipline as required.
- Report on site productivity, safety, equipment and manpower.
- Identify staffing needs and recruit and train personnel as required, ensuring the right skills are in place for successful project completion.
- Ensure the office and shop are running smoothly. Setting standards for behavior and positively influencing the culture.
Education/Qualifications/Training
- Minimum of 10+ years' experience in a similar position.
- Minimum of 7 years of construction, mining or oil and gas experience required.
- Experience with B2W software is considered an asset.
- Able to work well under pressure.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Good computer skills (i.e. outlook, calendar, excel, planner).
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Positive attitude and adaptable demeanor.
- Good organizational skills.
- Able to foster and maintain effective work relationships with direct and indirect reports and key stakeholders.
- Valid CSO certification.
- Has a good driver's abstract with a valid class 5 driver's license.
- Able to travel for work
- Will need to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and do various online training courses an orientations to access sites.
