Forestry Coordinator - Pipelines
We are seeking an experienced Forestry Coordinator (Contract) to oversee vegetation clearing and forestry compliance on a large-diameter pipeline project in British Columbia. This senior-level role requires extensive knowledge of BC forestry regulations and practices, including coordination with the BC Oil & Gas Commission (OGC), the Ministry of Forests, and other agencies. The Forestry Coordinator will ensure all clearing and timber management activities meet regulatory and environmental standards in BC’s challenging terrain.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and oversee clearing operations: Manage all right-of-way clearing, timber harvesting, and vegetation management activities along the pipeline route, ensuring work is executed safely and efficiently.
- Regulatory compliance: Ensure full compliance with BC forestry legislation and regulations. Secure necessary cutting permits and timber authorizations from the Ministry of Forests and BC OGC before clearing, and adhere to all permit conditions.
- Liaison with agencies: Act as the primary liaison with regulatory bodies and landowners. Work closely with the BC OGC, Ministry of Forests, and local authorities to meet all forestry and land-use requirements, and maintain clear documentation of approvals.
- Environmental coordination: Collaborate with the project’s environmental team to implement wildlife and habitat protection measures (e.g., nesting bird surveys, riparian area management) during clearing. Adjust clearing plans to minimize environmental impact in sensitive areas.
- Contractor management: Oversee forestry and clearing contractors (crews handling tree felling, log hauling, access road brushing, etc.). Monitor contractor performance for safety, quality, and adherence to project specifications and permit conditions.
- Documentation and reporting: Maintain detailed records of timber volumes harvested, disposal methods (e.g., burning, chipping, salvage), and reforestation or reclamation obligations. Prepare and submit required reports to regulators and project management to demonstrate compliance with all forestry-related requirements.
- Schedule integration: Work with project managers, construction teams, and land/permits coordinators to integrate clearing schedules with overall project timelines. Ensure that land access and clearing are completed in advance of pipeline construction activities to prevent delays.
- Problem solving in challenging terrain: Develop strategies for clearing in difficult BC terrain (steep slopes, dense forests, remote areas) and under adverse weather conditions. Implement best practices for safety (WorkSafeBC guidelines) and environmental protection when adapting plans to on-the-ground conditions.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Diploma or degree in forestry, natural resource management, or a related field. A Registered Professional Forester (RPF) designation (or eligibility) in BC is a strong asset.
- Experience: 10+ years in forestry or vegetation management operations, with at least 5 years in a senior coordinator or supervisory role on major infrastructure projects (pipeline or similar linear projects). Proven experience on large-diameter pipeline projects in BC is highly preferred.
- Regulatory knowledge: Extensive knowledge of BC forestry and land-use regulations and permitting processes. Hands-on experience obtaining cutting permits, timber salvage permits, or equivalent through the Ministry of Forests and understanding BC OGC requirements for land clearing on pipeline projects.
- BC terrain familiarity: Familiarity with the terrain and environmental challenges of BC’s interior and coastal regions – including working in mountainous landscapes, heavy forest cover, and environmentally sensitive areas. Ability to plan operations that consider wildlife, riparian zones, and seasonal restrictions (e.g., breeding bird windows).
- Stakeholder coordination: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Experience liaising with government regulators, Indigenous stakeholders, and local community representatives regarding forestry impacts and land use. Able to coordinate between field crews and project leadership effectively.
- Technical skills: Proficiency in relevant software tools for planning and documentation – for example, GIS mapping software to plan clearing areas and access, permit tracking databases, and MS Office suite for reporting. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, alignment sheets, and environmental maps.
- Safety and compliance: Strong commitment to safety and environmental stewardship. Knowledge of WorkSafeBC regulations and industry best practices for forestry operations. Demonstrated ability to enforce safety protocols and environmental mitigation measures on site.
- Contract & mobility: This is a contract position requiring flexibility to travel to various remote field locations in British Columbia. Willingness to spend significant time on site during active clearing periods and work collaboratively in both field and office settings as needed.
