Job summary

The Government of Nova Scotia is seeking a Production Supervisor for Forest Nursery Operations. You will coordinate daily nursery production and lead the nursery growing staff to ensure crop quality and timely delivery, reporting to the Manager of Nursery Operations.

Position requires a technician diploma and 4 years in related plant production, with strong leadership, organizational and collaboration skills. Permanent role located at Strathlorne, NS, with a competitive benefits package.

Qualifications

  • Technician diploma from a recognized agricultural or related institution and 4 years of related experience in greenhouse, nursery, horticultural, agricultural, forestry, or other plant production systems.
  • Strong team player and collaboration skills.
  • Effective decision-making related to nursery growing methods, irrigation, fertilization and crop management.
  • Strong organizational skills to develop and manage new projects at the Nursery.
  • Strong attention to detail with ability to notice subtle changes in plant color, texture and appearance.
  • Knowledge of greenhouse and nursery crop production practices including seedling propagation, irrigation management, fertilization programs, IPM, and environmental control systems.
  • Experience coordinating operational work plans and leading staff in production/greenhouse environments.
  • Proven ability to monitor crop performance and implement corrective actions to maintain quality and schedules.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to motivate staff and maintain a safe workplace.
  • Experience maintaining production/inventory records and preparing reports for planning.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and leads daily nursery production and greenhouse activities including seeding, thinning, transplanting, irrigation, fertilization, pest management, grading, storage, and shipping of seedlings, and manages inventory.
  • Provides specialized technical leadership and supervision to nursery staff to ensure tasks align with plans and quality standards.
  • Implements and adjusts growing plans, crop schedules, and production methods to meet quality and delivery targets.
  • Monitors production activities to identify risks to crop quality and timelines and takes corrective actions.
  • Coordinates with Maintenance Foreperson to ensure facilities and climate control systems support production needs.
  • Contributes to continuous improvement of nursery practices, efficiency, and quality control.
