Job summary

The Provincial Health Services Authority is seeking Forensic Psychiatrists for various roles within the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital and community-based treatment programs in Greater Vancouver. Successful candidates will perform assessments, develop treatment recommendations, and contribute to interdisciplinary care, working alongside experienced teams to assist individuals in the criminal justice system.

Qualifications

Forensic Psychiatrist

General Information

Psychiatrists and Psychologists with BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services (BCMHSUS), a program of the Provincial Health Services Authority, report dually to the BCMHSUS Medical Director and to the senior leadership team for their area of service(s). Medical professionals work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams supporting specific services: the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital, regional clinics, and the Forensic Assertive Community Treatment (FACT). Teams in forensic psychiatry support adults with complex mental health and substance use issues involved in the criminal justice system.

Working within Forensic Psychiatric Services, the focus will rely on experience in this area of care, including assessment and management of substance dependence and mental health issues. A high level of collaboration is used for patient management, recovery, rehabilitation, and reintegration into the community. Medical team members provide specialized forensic psychiatric and psychological assessment and treatment services to courts, the BC Review Board, and BC Corrections.

  • Forensic Psychiatrist, Forensic Assertive Community Treatment Team (FACT)
  • Forensic Psychiatrist, Community Transitional Care Program (CTC)
Accountabilities
Medical Expertise
  • Complete comprehensive assessments, including risk assessments for re-offending, based on legal orders and assessment requests; interpret results and develop treatment recommendations for court reports.
  • Participate in treatment planning conferences, considering holistic and interdisciplinary care approaches.
Knowledge Exchange
  • Support education within the Forensic Psychiatry team, sharing your clinical experience.
  • Encourage cross-appointments as faculty at the University of British Columbia to promote knowledge of forensic mental health treatment across the province.
Program Leadership
  • Lead care planning and implementation through innovative services and models, such as the new Forensic Assertive Community Treatment team (FACT).
  • Participate in system-wide improvement initiatives, including research, teaching, and health promotion.
Qualifications
Interested Candidates

Applicants should have fellowship standing in the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada in Psychiatry, with a subspecialty certification in Forensic Psychiatry, or an equivalent qualification. Candidates must be eligible for licensing with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of British Columbia.
