Job summary

The Mustard Seed in Calgary is seeking a Food Services - Relief to assist with preparing meals for guests and to manage incoming food deliveries, donations, and storage. This casual role reports to the Food Services Manager and requires teamwork with volunteers and staff.

The position involves handling donations, inventory, and following health and safety guidelines in a fast-paced kitchen environment. Responsibilities include menu planning within budget constraints, maintaining clean kitchen

Qualifications

  • Minimum of one year experience in the Food Service industry preferred.
  • Valid Food Safe certificate required.
  • Experience with menu planning and cooking for large quantities is an asset.
  • Ability to work with a team consisting of paid staff, volunteers and guests.

Employment Type: Casual Schedule: No Guaranteed Hours, picks up available shifts Reporting to: Food Services Manager City: Calgary Number of Positions to Fill: 1 RFR #: 2232


Reporting to the Shelter Food Services Manager, the Food Services - Relief is responsible, as part of a team, to assist with preparing meals for our guests. This position will also ensure all food deliveries from suppliers and donations are received, sorted, and stored in the most efficient manner.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Oversee the delivery of a healthy and nutritious meal program and create menus that match the budget and available donations

  • Receive, verify orders, and store all purchased food and kitchen items

  • Receive donated goods, sort, and transfer to appropriate area

  • Oversee stored food rotation

  • Keep all food inventories up to date

  • Track statistics such as temperature audits, serving statistics, meals served and other relevant data

  • Maintain cleanliness of kitchen (floors, countertops, walls and other areas)

  • Work in dish pit to clean cookware and dishes

  • Work alongside volunteers, both individuals and groups

  • Greet and welcome all donors in a professional and respectful manner

  • Follow the Environmental Health Services Guidelines regarding how food is prepared, handled, and stored

  • M aintain and abide by all Health & Safety standards and protocols, including completing a report for all incidents including near misses, in a timely manner

  • Pickup food if required

  • Other duties as assigned


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS



  • Valid Food Safe course certificate

  • A minimum of one (1) year experience working in the Food Service industry preferred

  • Experience with menu planning, large quantity cooking, and working with donated goods is an asset

  • Ability to work with a team consisting of paid staff, volunteers and guests

  • Ability to respect and adhere to boundaries policies in relation to coworkers, volunteers and guests

  • Ability to resolve conflicts as they arise


WORKING CONDITIONS



  • This is a casual position requiring availability to work weekdays and weekends

  • Fast-paced challenging work environment

  • Physical effort: moderate to significant amounts of walking, climbing, standing, sitting, lifting, carrying; must be able to lift up to 25 to 50 pounds

  • Mental effort: position often requires substantial mental effort to analyze information and problem solve

  • Daily interactions with colleagues and guests required

  • Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times, which could result in them uttering threats, discriminatory statements, and other insults at your person. This may be in a raised voice, or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive.

  • Training on how to respond is provided, but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments.
