Job summary

The Mustard Seed is seeking a part-time Cook to support meals for shelter guests and the community in Red Deer. You will prepare meals under supervision, assist with volunteer coordination, and help with receiving and storing food and donations in a busy kitchen.

Ideal candidates have at least two years cooking experience, a Food Safe certificate, and strong communication skills to work with staff, volunteers, and donors.

Qualifications

  • Minimum two years of cooking experience in food service.
  • Valid Alberta Health Services Food Safe certificate or willingness to obtain within 1 month.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a kitchen and with volunteers.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare meals for shelter guests and community members when Chef is away.
  • Serve meals, coordinate volunteers, and clean up after service.
  • Use ingredients efficiently to minimize waste.
  • Assist Supervisor with inventory and placing orders when required.
  • Receive and verify orders; store purchased food and kitchen items.
  • Maintain food rotation and organize storage of food and donations.
  • Keep the kitchen clean: dishes, cookware, floors, walls, sinks.
  • Greet donors professionally and respectfully.
  • Follow necessary boundaries with coworkers, volunteers and guests.
  • Adhere to Health and Safety guidelines; report incidents promptly.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Reporting to the Food Services Supervisor, the Cook will be part of a team and in the absence of the Chef, fill in to prepare delicious and nutritious meals for our guests. Responsibilities will include helping to coordinate evening meal services and assisting volunteers to prepare, serve and clean up after meals. This role will also ensure all food deliveries from suppliers and donations are received, checked, sorted, and stored in the most safe and efficient manner.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Prepare meals for shelter guests and community members, in Chef’s absence
  • Serve meals to guests, assist in coordinating volunteers, and clean up after meal service
  • Utilize ingredients and supplies efficiently to minimize waste
  • Assist Supervisor with inventory and place orders when required
  • Receive and verify orders, and store all purchased food and kitchen items
  • Ensure proper food rotation and organize storage of food, supplies and donations
  • Maintain cleanliness of the kitchen: wash dishes, clean cookware and cutlery; clean floors, coolers, walls, sinks etc.
  • Greet and welcome all donors in a professional and respectful manner
  • Respect and follow necessary boundaries with coworkers, volunteers, and guests
  • Follow the Environmental Health Services Guidelines regarding how food is prepared, handled, and stored
  • Maintain Occupational Health & Safety Standards
  • Adhere to all Health & Safety protocols including completing a report for all incidents that occur, including near misses, in a timely manner

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
  • A minimum of two (2) years cooking experience working in the Food Service industry
  • Valid certificate from the Alberta Health Services Food Safe course preferred, or willingness to obtain within 1 month of hire
  • Ability to independently prepare high quality food in a commercial kitchen for a large number of clients
  • Ability to creatively incorporate ingredients to utilize donations and reduce waste
  • Willingness to participate in training required by The Mustard Seed
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to resolve conflicts and solve problems as they arise
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • This is position requires shift coverage and availability to work various shift times including evenings and weekends
  • This is a “hands on” position requiring moderate to significant physical effort such as: extended periods of standing, walking, sitting, climbing, lifting, reaching, carrying (must be able to lift up to 25 to 50 pounds)
  • Position is often fast-paced and demanding, requiring substantial mental effort to analyze information and problem solve
  • Daily interactions with colleagues and guests required
  • Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times, which could result in them uttering threats, discriminatory statements, and other insults at your person. This may be in a raised voice, or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive.
    • Training on how to respond is provided, but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments.
