Job description

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Manager - Food & Nutrition Services, or designate, is responsible for the pre and final preparation of foods, service to residents, staff, patrons (Meals on Wheels, Jasper Place, Grace Remus Daycare, etc.), special functions, catering, and maintaining cleanliness of work areas according to the assigned shift.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Serve meals to residents, staff, and patrons, ensuring quality, portion control, and attractive presentation following best practices, including therapeutic and texture-modified diets; observe, record, and report concerns to Supervisor or designate per Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care standards.
  2. Handle food safely, ensuring correct storage of food materials.
  3. Operate all food service equipment, including the cash register.
  4. Maintain cleanliness of work area and equipment.
  5. Use equipment carefully, follow supply, chemical, and hazard reporting protocols.
  6. Load and transport dishes to and from kitchen and dining areas.
  7. Wash dishes, utensils, pots, pans, and other kitchenware.
  8. Provide courteous customer service to residents, families, staff, visitors, and patrons.
  9. Participate in meetings, training, and complete education as assigned.
  10. Engage in safety procedures, including fire drills and evacuations.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

  • Grade ten education or equivalent.
  • Current Safe Food Handling certification approved by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.
  • Completion or enrollment in a food service worker training program approved by a college or private career college, or meets training requirements under Reg. 246/22 of the Fixing Long Term Care Act.
  • Relevant skills, knowledge, and experience in institutional, healthcare, restaurant, or hospitality food service.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Good lifting, safety, and sanitation techniques.
  • Interest and understanding of the needs of the elderly and frail.
  • Competency under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Assets:

  • Experience in healthcare food services (long-term care, hospital, retirement home).

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination required at conditional offer.
  • Review and attest to all Pioneer Ridge Staff Immunization Policies before starting.
  • Willingness to work shifts, including holidays and weekends.
  • Successful two-step tuberculosis skin test within 12 months prior.
  • Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) clearance.
  • Complete Offence & Professional Misconduct Declaration.
  • Complete mandatory training annually.
  • Maintain current Safe Food Handling certification.
