Job summary

St. Clement's School is seeking a Casual Food Service Worker 1 to assist in food preparation and maintain kitchen cleanliness under the supervision of the teacher/chef. The role involves working closely with students in a culinary program, requiring effective communication and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 and Food Safe Level 1 certification required.
  • One year post-secondary education as a cook apprentice or equivalent experience.
  • Recent relevant experience working in a kitchen (3-6 months).

Casual Food Service Worker 1

$28.96 per hour

Summary

Under the direction of the teacher/chef and/or the general supervision of the School Administrator, the Food Service Worker prepares food and performs cashiering, clean-up and routine duties and may oversee students engaged in some of these tasks.

The proportion of time spent in the various functions varies with the requirements of the culinary programs. Initially, job duties and the style of assistance to students are outlined in detail and closely supervised by the teacher and/or the School Administrator, but as the Food Service Worker becomes familiar with the program, procedures and students, some independence of judgment is exercised, within established guidelines. Difficult or unusual problems are referred to the supervisor.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparation of food following established procedures in various areas of the kitchen, e.g. breakfast, baking, pasta, sandwich preparation etc.
  • Assists culinary programs students with food preparation and keeping areas in a tidy and sanitary condition
  • Operates a cash register, or oversees students doing so
  • Assists teacher/chef or principal with food costing and price points
  • Assists teacher/chef or principal with menu and event planning
  • Notes materials and supplies needed and maintainssuitable inventory for the kitchen
  • Assists students in preparing laundry for sending out and checking it upon return
  • Performs clean-up tasks, e.g. operates dishwasher, washes pots, cleans tables and counters, takes out garbage, etc. as required
  • Assists with organizing, set-up and clean-up of banquets
  • Performs other related duties as may reasonably be expected of a person in this position

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of school district operations, policies and procedures
  • Ability to lift and transfer supplies and perform clean-up activities
  • Ability to follow written instructions and recipes, making measurement conversions if required
  • An interest in, and ability to work effectively with students
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to handle cash, make change and operate cash register
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Working knowledge of methods, equipment and ingredients used in a commercial kitchen or food operation
  • Working knowledge of healthy and safe work practices in accordance with WorkSafe BC Regulations for Workers, and the ability to instruct others
  • Working knowledge of kitchen sanitation and cleaning procedures

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12
  • One year post-secondary education as a cook apprentice, or cook training level one or baking/pastry training or a combination of education and experience
  • Food Safe Level 1 certified
  • Emergency First Aid certified
  • Advanced knowledge of commercial kitchen food preparation, presentation, service, portion control, cook and baking techniques
  • A clear Criminal Record Review to be updated every five (5) years

Required Experience

  • Recent relevant experience working in a kitchen; over three months, up to and including six months
