The Opportunity

This position is responsible for the pre- and final preparation of foods, service to residents, staff, patrons (Meals on Wheels, Jasper Place, Grace Remus Daycare, special functions, and catering), and maintaining cleanliness of work areas, according to the shift assigned.

Key responsibilities :

  • Serves meals to residents, staff, and patrons, maintaining quality, portion control, and attractive presentation following best practices, including therapeutic and texture-modified diets; observes, records, and reports concerns to Supervisor or designate in accordance with Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care standards.
  • Responsible for sanitary food handling and proper storage of food materials.
  • Operates all food service equipment including the cash register.
  • Maintains cleanliness of the work area and equipment.
  • Responsible for careful operation and use of all equipment, follows recommended utilization of supplies and chemicals, and reports hazards and equipment defects.
  • Loads and moves dishes to and from kitchen and dining areas.
  • Provides courteous and tactful customer service to residents, families, staff, visitors, and other patrons.

The Ideal Candidate

This position requires :

  • Grade ten education or equivalent; and
  • Current Safe Food Handling certification approved by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit; and completion of or enrollment in a food service worker training program approved at a college of applied arts and technology or a Food Service Worker program provided by a private career college or otherwise meeting the training and qualifications requirements under Reg. 246 / 22 of the Fixing Long Term Care Act; or
  • Experience in institutional, healthcare, restaurant, or hospitality food service to perform the duties required.
  • Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good lifting, safety, and sanitation techniques
  • A genuine interest and understanding of the needs of the frail and elderly
  • Competency within the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Preference for candidates with previous food service experience in healthcare settings (long-term care, retirement home, hospital)
