Food Safety Specialist - RES007317

Employment Type: SGEU Term, 9 months or more

Location: Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture

Salary Range: $41.174 - $51.598 hourly

Grade: SGEU.12

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture’s Livestock Branch is seeking an energetic, self-motivated, and innovative individual to join our team as a Food Safety Specialist.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage the domestic meat inspection program, including licensing, auditing domestic meat plants (slaughter and processing), and contract management.
  • Understand the food and meat regulatory environments in Saskatchewan and Canada.
  • Perform policy analysis on the meat and food sector in Saskatchewan and Canada, focusing on competitive, regulatory, and food safety issues that may impact the economic viability and development of Saskatchewan's food industry.
  • Anticipate, identify, and monitor existing and emerging safety and food policy issues and assess their impact on the Saskatchewan food industry.
  • Identify appropriate policies, modifications, and programming to advance the food sector in Saskatchewan.
  • Collaborate with industry groups, agri-food businesses, and food processors to understand sector needs.
  • Engage with other branches within the Ministry, other provincial ministries, and federal, provincial, and territorial partners on meat and food safety policies.
Ideal Candidate:
  • Possesses knowledge of food safety and meat science.
  • Understands the Canadian and Saskatchewan food processing industries, including production, marketing, development, transportation, and storage.
  • Can summarize and explain issues and analysis related to food and meat science effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Has the ability to manage service delivery contracts.
  • Can develop and maintain partnerships with stakeholder groups.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
Qualifications:
  • Completion of an undergraduate degree in Food Science, complemented by industry experience, or
  • Completion of an M.Sc. degree in Food Science, with specialization in food chemistry, microbiology, and/or food processing.
