Reporting to the Food Services Manager, the Food Counter Attendant, as part of a team, provides support to the operation of the kitchen at The Mustard Seed in Edmonton by assisting with sorting and organizing food donations, food preparation, meal service and cleaning activities. Maintaining Occupational Health & Safety Standards is also a key part of this role.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Sort and organize of food donations
  • Perform food preparation such as peeling and chopping vegetables, slicing meat, making sandwiches and other menu items
  • Assist with serving guests meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Assist with clean-up after the meal service including washing and storing dishes
  • Ensure pantry, coolers, freezers, and fridges are kept clean and organized
  • Clean and keep kitchen organized
  • Work alongside and assist with volunteers as required
  • Maintain Occupational Health & Safety Standards
  • Follow and adhere to Alberta Health Food Safety Standards
  • Participate in all required training
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Experience working in a kitchen environment is considered an asset
  • Food safety certification is considered a strong asset
  • Must be able to handle a knife and have basic kitchen skills (operating oven, dishwasher, other appliances)
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good problem-solving and quick decision-making skills; ability to think “on-your-feet”
  • Ability to recognize and maintain appropriate boundaries with co-workers, volunteers and guests
  • High level of confidentiality, especially pertaining to guests’ information
  • Willingness to participate in any essential training required by The Mustard Seed
  • Desire to serve in a Christian ministry

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Hands-on, fast-paced, active position position requiring moderate to significant physical effort: lifting up to 25lbs, standing for duration of shift, bending, pushing, or pulling carts
  • Position requires moderate to significant mental effort
  • Position involves working closely with volunteers and staff
  • Ability to work in hot and cold temperatures/work environment required

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR CANADA SUMMER JOBS

  • Be between 18 and 30 years of age (must be 30 years of age on start date).
