Job summary

The Salvation Army in Toronto seeks a Floor Counsellor to provide professional, safe, and structured support in the Toronto Harbour Light Treatment program. You will document client interactions accurately and help maintain a secure environment across overnight shifts from Friday to Sunday.

Ideal candidates have a Diploma in human services and 1+ year in social services, with experience in mental health or addiction recovery.

Responsibilities

  • Model healthy life skills and socialization for clients.
  • Provide residential support and enforce house guidelines.
  • Monitor client whereabouts; ensure safety after hours.
  • Assist Residential Care staff in emergencies and crisis situations.
  • Distribute medications and supervise urine screens.
  • Perform clerical duties and maintain logs and reports.
  • Communicate with Program Coordinator and other staff as required.

Job Description

This is an overnight awake position, 27 hours weekly from Friday to Sunday. Position Purpose summary: The priority of the Floor Counsellor is to ensure professional, safe and structured support to our clients in the Toronto Harbour Light Treatment program. The Floor Counsellor will behave professionally and courteously at all times, presenting a positive impression of Toronto Harbour Light to the clients living within the facility. The Floor Counsellor will document accurately and appropriately all contacts with clients and ensure the safety of the environment at all times

Accountabilities

Responsibilities: Appropriately model healthy life skills and socialization to clients Provide support to clients in residence and ensure guidelines are followed Monitor client whereabouts via security cameras, on pass, or attendance log Manage the safety and security of the residential treatment floors after office hours, including supporting Residential Care staff in case of emergency Manage interpersonal crisis and conflict situations among clients Process any discharge, write ups or admittance to detox as per policy Effectively and safely manage distribution of client medications Supervise client urine screens and others Conduct searches of client belongings and rooms when required Serve meals & perform housekeeping duties, i.e. stock supplies Train, assign and supervise client chores as necessary Review and complete clerical duties as necessary (log & communication books) Other duties as assigned Written and Verbal Communication (example) Provide reports regarding failure to return, urine screens, bed checks in EMHware Reports on nightly rounds, client's overall attitude, any observations or infractions through EMHware Other reporting when required to document statistics or other program items CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT Communicates with Program Coordinator Communicates with other Treatment staff, Residential Care Workers and Senior Managers when required Appropriately communicates with Support Services staff when necessary Governance Boards and Councils: None Internal: May sit on internal committees MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY: Reports directly to: Program Coordinator FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT: Use or distribution of materials such as urine screens, office supplies, supplies required by treatment clients, including medications. WORKING CONDITIONS: The performance of the job requires frequent keyboarding and sitting for long periods of time. Requires standing and moving around for long periods of time The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement, in a professional manner, exemplifying Christian standards of conduct.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications

Diploma in one of the human services professions, social services preferred Alternate level of education and experience may be considered

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

1+ year experience within social services field 1+ year experience in mental health/addiction recovery field preferred Experience working with diverse population, men specifically Experience with mental health, concurrent disorders, treatment and recovery

Skills and Capabilities

Excellent oral and written communication skills Education and experience in basic counseling skills, and knowledge of Abstinence Based Model of Treatment Crisis/Conflict Management Skills Diversity awareness and appreciation Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills First Aid/CPR Certification an asset WHMIS training an asset Proficient with Windows based computer systems, MS Word, e-mail and data entry

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $21.28 to $26.60 with a maximum of $31.92. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
