Job summary

Saint-Gobain North America is seeking a Logistics Manager to ensure the smooth operation of our fleet and maximize efficiency across all locations. You will oversee warehousing, distribution, inbound/outbound freight, and adherence to safety, legal, and company policies.

You will manage the truck and equipment fleet, coordinate with carriers, foster customer service, and implement performance metrics and quality controls.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all delivery commitments are met and shipped product conforms to quality standards
  • Communicate delays or variances in inbound/outbound freight to appropriate parties
  • Coordinate shipping activities to optimize internal fleet and outside carriers
  • Maintain relationships with outside carriers for capacity and cost competitiveness
  • Improve customer service by aligning logistics with sales
  • Manage fleet and day-to-day interactions with external freight suppliers
  • Oversee loading crews to ensure safe loads and complete shipments
  • Schedule trucks and trailers and report monthly mileage
  • Implement and monitor warehouse and shipping performance metrics
  • Investigate causes of lost or damaged shipments
  • Analyze shipping KPIs for efficiency and growth or cost reduction
  • Ensure IFTA reporting is done timely
  • Complete annual licensing/permitting for trucks/trailers
  • Apply for and maintain specialty permits as required
  • Keep shipping area and yard clean and organized
  • Develop a quality control program for loading
  • Train outside carriers on safety, service, and accountability
  • Develop Shipping & Distribution manual for documented processes
  • Handle difficult customer situations professionally
  • Respond promptly to customer needs both internally and externally
  • Maintain and enforce health and safety policies
  • Conduct regular workplace inspections and support Corporate Health and Safety program
  • Maintain knowledge of Health and Safety policies
  • Monitor accident frequency and analyze injury data
  • Investigate accidents/incidents and act on recommendations
  • Promote teamwork across departments
  • Conduct monthly crew meetings to discuss procedures, policies and safety
  • Assist with succession planning in Shipping & Distribution
  • Review work for accuracy and quality; identify improvements
  • Participate in hiring, promotions and disciplinary actions
  • Maintain harmony among workers and resolve grievances with HR
  • Monitor GPS for driver hours and discrepancies
  • Ensure hours of work comply with government rules

Job description

The Logistics Manager, under the direction of the VP of Operations, People, and Culture, is responsible for ensuring the proper functioning of our fleet and helping to maximize the efficiency of the fleet across all locations. This position is responsible for the direct management of all warehousing and distribution functions and includes accountability for inbound/outbound and effective storage of freight, as well as adherence to legislative, safety, and organizational policies and procedures.

Operational

  • Ensure all established delivery commitments are met and that all shipped product conforms to company quality standards
  • Communicate all delays or variances in inbound/outbound freight to the appropriate parties
  • Coordinate shipping activities with all other functions within the organization to obtain optimum performance from the internal fleet and the outside carriers
  • Working with broader Logistics organization, develop and maintain relationships with outside carriers to ensure availability of extra capacity as required and to ensure cost competitiveness with all carriers
  • Enhance communication between sales and logistics to increase the level of customer service
  • Manage the business unit truck and equipment fleet and day-to-day interactions with external freight suppliers
  • Oversee loading crew in all locations to ensure that loads are being built safely and that orders are being shipped completely
  • Ensure the Shipping and Distribution teams are scheduling all trucks and trailers for service, reporting monthly mileage
  • Implement and monitor performance metrics for warehouse and shipping employees
  • Investigate causes of lost or damaged shipments
  • Analyze shipping metrics and KPIs for efficiency improvement as well as looking for potential areas of growth or cost reduction
  • Ensure that IFTA reporting is occurring on a timely basis
  • Complete the annual licensing/permitting functions for all trucks and trailers
  • Apply for and maintain all specialty truck and trailer permits, where required
  • Ensure that the shipping area and yard stay clean and organized
  • Develop a quality control program for loading to ensure that loads are being shipped accurately and completely
  • Develop a training program for outside carriers, ensuring they are trained to deliver our product safely, understand the customer service requirements, and are held accountable for damage/back charges
  • Develop a Shipping & Distribution manual to ensure that processes are well documented and sustainable
  • Manage difficult customer situations in a professional manner
  • Respond promptly to customer needs both internally and externally
Health and Safety
  • Maintain and enforce company safety policies
  • Ensure that all staff under your direction are following all safe work practices
  • Perform regular workplace inspections, both scheduled and unscheduled
  • Support all aspects of the Corporate Health and Safety program
  • Maintain a strong knowledge of all Health and Safety policies
  • Monitor accident frequency and history and analyze injury data
  • Report all accidents/incidents promptly, conduct investigations, and act on recommendations
Human Resources
  • Promote teamwork within and across departments
  • Conduct and document monthly crew meetings to discuss, review and implement items such as new/existing procedures, company policies, department performance, safety talks, Health and Safety
  • Assist with succession planning in the Shipping & Distribution department
  • Review all work performed by employees for completion, accuracy and quality and identify any performance improvements
  • Participate in selection process, discipline and training and recommend actions such as hiring, promotions and appropriate disciplinary actions
  • Maintain harmony among workers and resolve any grievances with the assistance of Human Resources
  • Monitor and manage GPS system for driver’s hours and note any discrepancies
  • Ensure hours of work are in compliance with government rules

In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for a discretionary bonus.
