Pay Rate: $25 - $35 per hour (training); $17.67 per hour (floor rate). We also offer access to our superb sport, fitness, and recreational facilities.

The Position:

Reporting to the Senior Coordinator, Fitness & Wellness, the primary responsibility of the Fitness & Wellness Instructor will be to ensure the delivery of quality group fitness classes by leading members through accessible group exercise classes.

The Fitness & Wellness Instructor will promote members’ participation in all membership-based programs and activities offered at Abilities Centre, as well as develop relationships and collaborate with other departments to identify participant pathways that align with member goals.

What You’ll Do:

  • Instruct:
    • Support the set up and take down of group fitness classes.
    • Adapt all exercises to fit a variety of abilities in all classes.
    • Exercise creativity and innovation to assist the Senior Coordinator in the delivery of high-quality fitness classes.
    • Enhance member experience by keeping members engaged and encouraged during group fitness classes.
  • Culture:
    • Cultivate an inclusive and welcoming environment resulting in an exceptional customer experience.
    • Use strong problem-solving skills and ability to pivot services as needed.
    • Establish rapport and maintain effective relationships with members, staff, volunteers, visitors, and community partners.
    • Foster a work environment that values and encourages teamwork and empowerment.
  • Other:
    • Collaborate with Senior Coordinator and other staff to handle non-routine customer service requirements with diplomacy and tact.
    • If scheduled, during floor shifts monitor client activity in the fieldhouse (which includes the courts, tracks, cardio, free weight, and Move Strong areas), giving guidance and assistance to members when needed.
    • Attend staff meetings, professional development workshops and organizational-wide trainings.
    • Assist with administrative activities, as needed by the Senior Coordinator, along with other duties as assigned.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Education and Experience:
    • Attending or a graduate of university or college program in Kinesiology, Physical Education, or Fitness related field.
    • Required: Valid Group Fitness Certification from CSEP, CPTN, Can Fit-Pro, or similar association.
    • More than one year’s experience instructing group fitness classes and comfortable with leading exercise sessions in front of large groups.
    • Desired: Experience instructing Spin, Yoga, Zumba/Dance Fit, Total Body Fit, and/or HIIT.
  • Technical Skills and Knowledge:
    • Knowledge of inclusion, accessibility, and accommodation.
    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Proficient in Microsoft 365 and knowledge of ACTIVENet or similar recreation management software.
  • Professional Skills:
    • Self-motivated, results oriented, shows great initiative, and able to work independently without close supervision.
    • Effective team player with positive attitude, interacting well with members and fellow employees.
    • Good interpersonal and relationship-building skills demonstrating rapport with people of diverse backgrounds.
    • Dedicated to a customer experience that exceeds expectations.
  • Administrative Requirements:
    • Required: Current and clear criminal record check for the vulnerable sector.
    • Required: Current and valid First Aid and CPR ‘C’ / AED certification.
  • Availability:
    • Required: Available to work weekdays, evenings, and weekends - consistent schedule to instruct weekly group fitness classes.
