Canada Summer Jobs
(CSJ) is a program under the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS), which aims to provide quality summer employment opportunities for youth to develop skills and gain paid work experience to successfully transition into the labour market.
Eligibility criteria include:
- Being between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period
- Being a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
- Having a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and being legally entitled to work in Canada according to relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

Job Summary:
The Fitness Instructor is responsible for providing client-centered, evidence-based, efficient care to individuals in their homes and community. The instructor delivers exercises under the direction of the Program Supervisor and/or designate, aligned with certification standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Sets up physical class environment (chairs, equipment, etc.)
- Develops, modifies, and delivers low-impact, safe, and effective group or in-home exercises tailored for older adults, considering medical issues and risks
- Utilizes tools and resources effectively (resistance bands, exercise balls, weights, music, etc.)
- Uses effective communication skills to gather information from clients and complete paperwork
- Promotes client independence through fitness and health initiatives
- Works toward client goals and participates in service review and evaluation
- Attends educational in-services as deemed appropriate
- Provides fall prevention education as directed
- Reports incidents timely according to legislation and policies
- Performs other duties as assigned

- Promotes VON's goals and values as an integrated community care provider
- Ensures a safe and healthy workplace compliant with Occupational Health and Safety Act and VON policies
- Maintains confidentiality and protects personal information
- Collaborates with team members for service delivery
External and Internal Relationships:
- Engages with clients, program staff, community partners to support client needs and independence
Education, Designations, and Experience:
- High school diploma
- First Aid and CPR certification
- Certification as a Seniors Fitness Instructor or equivalent (training provided if needed)
- Experience in promoting health through physical activity
- Post-secondary education in related healthcare fields is an asset
- Minimum 2 years of experience teaching fitness for older adults, including chronic conditions

Other Requirements:
- Access to a personal vehicle, valid driver’s license, and insurance

Physical demands include walking, sitting, standing, climbing stairs, lifting, and other movements emphasizing good body mechanics in a dynamic environment.
