Job Summary:

The Fitness Instructor is responsible for leading fitness classes to clients under the direction of the Program coordinator and/or Physiotherapist (PT) associated with the program and in line with certification standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Leads fitness classes.
  2. Works toward fulfillment of client goals as outlined on assessment.
  3. Participates in ongoing review of service delivery process and evaluation.
  4. Attends educational in-services as deemed appropriate by PT and/or coordinator.
  5. May provide fall prevention education as directed by Coordinator and/or regulated professionals.
  6. Reports any situations deemed inappropriate to their PT/coordinator.
  7. Ensures all incidents are reported in a timely manner in accordance with legislation and VON policies and procedures.
  8. Reports any defect in equipment that may endanger themselves or others.
  9. Functions and reports in compliance with OHS legislation, regulations, and VON policies and procedures.

External and Internal Relationships:

  • Frequent interaction with Coordinator, Physiotherapist, and clients.

Education, Designations, and Experience:

  1. High school graduate.
  2. CCAA Certification as a Seniors Fitness Instructor and/or equivalent is required at the time of hire or within 3 months from hire.
  3. Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching group fitness classes for older adults, including experience teaching specialized classes for chronic conditions such as Osteoporosis, Parkinson's Disease, Diabetes, Osteoarthritis, etc., is an asset.
  4. Experience promoting health and well-being through physical activity.
  5. Experience working in an assisted living environment, e.g., recreation therapy, is an asset.
  6. Bilingual in French/English is an asset.

Other:

  1. Must have access to a personal vehicle for business use and possess both a current driver’s license and proof of vehicle insurance.
  2. Current criminal background check including a vulnerable sector screen is required.
  3. Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Working conditions and physical demands: This role requires a detail-oriented approach in a dynamic environment, with physical activity including lifting, carrying (using proper techniques), bending, reaching, kneeling, and other movements that emphasize good body mechanics. Individuals in the role are required to walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs throughout the day, with some tasks requiring fine hand movements.
