Job summary

Hermitage Processing Inc, a division of Cooke Aquaculture Inc., is expanding its Processing Team and seeking a dedicated Fish Handling Labourer. You will receive, sort, weigh, and prepare fish and seafood for storage and shipment, operate material handling equipment, and help maintain quality and safety standards across receiving, processing, storage, and loading areas.

This role requires physical stamina, the ability to work as part of a team, and adherence to food safety procedures.

Qualifications

  • No formal education required.
  • Experience in fish processing, seafood handling, warehouse, shipping/receiving, wharf operations, or general labour is an asset.
  • Forklift experience is an asset.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow workplace safety procedures and operational instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Receive fish and seafood products from holding tanks and receiving areas.
  • Transfer products between holding tanks, coolers, storage facilities, processing areas and loading areas.
  • Assist with transfer of products from vessels when required.
  • Sort, grade, weigh, inspect, and record products by species, size, quality, and destination.
  • Prepare products for storage and shipment by icing, packing, palletizing, and staging.
  • Load and unload trucks and other transportation vehicles.
  • Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other handling equipment to move products and supplies.
  • Assist with shipping, receiving, inventory control, and product traceability.
  • Clean and sanitize tanks, equipment, work areas, and storage facilities.
  • Follow all food safety, QA, biosecurity, OH&S, and company policies.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
  • (Other duties as required based on operational needs)
  • Assist fish processing operations, including cleaning and packaging, during peak times.

Position Summary

The Fish Handling Labourer is responsible for receiving, handling, sorting, grading, weighing, transferring, and preparing fish and seafood products for storage, processing, and shipment. The position supports daily seafood operations by moving products between receiving, holding, processing, storage, and loading areas; operating material handling equipment; loading and unloading transportation vehicles; and maintaining product quality and food safety standards. Employees may also assist with fish processing, packaging, and production activities as operational requirements dictate.

Duties and Responsibilities

The employee will perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Receive fish and seafood products from holding tanks, receiving areas, and other designated work areas.
  • Transfer fish and seafood products between holding tanks, coolers, storage facilities, processing areas, and loading areas.
  • Assist with the transfer and handling of fish and seafood products from vessels when operationally required.
  • Sort, grade, weigh, inspect, and record fish and seafood products according to species, size, quality standards, and destination requirements.
  • Prepare fish and seafood products for storage and shipment by icing, packing, palletizing, and staging products for transport.
  • Load and unload trucks and other transportation vehicles for the movement and shipment of fish and seafood products.
  • Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment to move products, packaging materials, and supplies throughout the facility.
  • Assist with shipping, receiving, inventory control, and product traceability activities.
  • Clean and sanitize tanks, equipment, work areas, coolers, loading areas, and storage facilities
  • Follow all food safety, quality assurance, biosecurity, occupational health and safety, and company policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities

(Performed as required based on operational needs)

  • Assist fish processing operations, including cleaning, trimming, grading, filleting, packaging, and preparing fish and seafood products for further processing or shipment.
  • Support production-line operations during periods of increased production demand.
Employment Requirements
  • No formal education required.
  • Previous fish processing, seafood handling, warehouse, shipping/receiving, wharf operations, or general labour experience is considered an asset.
  • Forklift experience is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow workplace safety procedures and operational instructions.
