First Nations Veterans Program Coordinator

SCO is a growing and dynamic regional First Nation organization that represents 32 Anishinaabe and Dakota Nations and more than 87,000 citizens in what is now southern Manitoba. Established in 1999 by the Chiefs, SCO is mandated as an independent organization to protect, preserve, promote, and enhance First Nation peoples’ inherent rights, languages, customs, and traditions through the application and implementation of the spirit and intent of the Treaty-making process.

OVERVIEW:

Reporting to the Veterans Program Lead, the First Nations Veterans Program (FNVP) Coordinator supports the delivery of the Southern Chiefs’ Organization’s First Nations Veterans Program. This position ensures smooth day-to-day program operations by coordinating monthly Veteran events, expanding the outreach of the program to First Nation communities in southern Manitoba, and managing key administrative tasks. The FNVP Coordinator plays a vital role in honouring and supporting the needs of First Nation Veterans through culturally relevant programming and program support.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate and support the delivery of monthly Veteran-focused events, including logistics, communications, scheduling, purchasing supplies, booking venues, and hiring facilitators
  • Attend FNVP events, ceremonies, and gatherings to provide on-site coordination and support
  • Provide ongoing support for First Nations to engage in commemoration activities on and off reserve
  • Complete administrative tasks related to program delivery, including:
    • Submitting finance and travel requests
    • Processing honoraria for Elders, facilitators, and Veterans
    • Maintaining records and tracking event participation statistics
  • Assist in collecting and maintaining accurate data for reporting purposes
  • Maintain an organized calendar of program activities, meetings, and outreach opportunities
  • Conduct outreach to First Nation communities and at public events to promote FNVP services and connect with new Veterans
  • Support booth set-up and public engagement by representing the FNVP at conferences, pow wows, and community gatherings
  • Support the planning and execution of annual awareness campaigns (e.g., Remembrance Day, Indigenous Veterans Day)
  • Assist in the design and/or development of new and innovative programming/service initiatives that address the needs of First Nation Veterans
  • Additional duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-secondary education in social services, administration, community development, Indigenous governance, or a related field
  • Three (3) years’ experience in an administrative role. A combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and/or Veterans is key. Incumbent will have a thorough understanding of First Nations history, cultures, and traditions, with a commitment to culturally safe programming, and possess the ability to develop relationships with Veterans, First Nation leadership and communities, collateral support services, and Canadian Forces personnel for the purpose of supporting Veterans and Veterans’ programming
  • Experience planning or administratively supporting public events
  • Experience leading or assisting in program development
  • Reliable, self-motivated, and comfortable working both independently and collaboratively
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate with variable audiences and in diverse environments
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines while maintaining attention to detail, work in an organized fashion, and handle confidential or sensitive information appropriately
  • Proficiency in the use of computers and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Teams)
  • Ability to speak Anishinaabe or Dakota languages would be considered an asset

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must provide a current and satisfactory criminal record check including vulnerable sector check
  • A valid class 5 MB driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle as travel will be required
  • If a candidate is a member of a registered profession, the candidate must be a member in good standing with their regulatory body

POSTED WAGE RANGE: $60,000 – $75,000 Annually
