WHATS THE JOB

Based in a world-class Horizon North camp facility, the regular shift for this position is 20 days on and 10 days off, with 11-hour workdays. Transportation is provided to the site from a designated pick-up point.

The First Cook is responsible for preparing and cooking all main meals as per requirements and ensuring all meals are prepared and served on time to the highest standards of Horizon North.

This position is safety-sensitive and requires drug/alcohol and fit-to-work testing as a condition of employment.

Your work will include :

  • Cooking a variety of appetizing meals including meats, seafood, soups, poultry, vegetables, and other food items.
  • Using various cooking methods such as deep-frying, pan-frying, broiling, baking, boiling, grilling, sautéing, steaming, and others to prepare top-quality food.
  • Ensuring all meals are prepared within the allocated food budget.
  • Maintaining consistency in food delivery, including proper handling, storing, and labeling of products in accordance with FOODSAFE standards.
  • Performing duties related to final food presentation, including plating and garnishing.
  • Operating commercial and non-commercial kitchen equipment such as stoves, ovens, steamers, grills, and broilers.
  • Assisting in menu planning, inventory counts, and grocery orders.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of dining and kitchen areas.
  • Supporting all kitchen roles—from dishwashing to prep cooking and meal execution—to ensure on-time meal service and kitchen cleanliness standards.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the hospitality/food service industry.
  • Desired credential: Interprovincial Red Seal Certificate; minimum requirement: completion of a 2-year culinary arts program.
  • Desired qualification: 1 year of prior experience as a Sous Chef in hotels, resorts, restaurants, or camps, with knowledge of international and domestic cuisines.
  • Strong practical and theoretical knowledge in all kitchen areas: Hot Kitchens, Cold Kitchens, Pastry/Bakery, Butchery, and Banquets handling large numbers of guests.
  • FoodSafe Level I is minimum; additional certifications like SafeCheck or HACCP are assets.
  • Knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook.
  • Must achieve a 100% or higher score on the mandatory WHMIS test.
