Fire Weather Network Crew Member role involves supporting the Technicians in maintaining and upgrading the real-time automated fire weather network. This network delivers data that adheres to standards set by the Canadian Forest Fire Danger rating system, the World Meteorological Organization, and Environment Canada. This data, retrieved through satellite and cellular modem connections, is crucial for timely and accurate data reporting is critical for evaluating and forecasting fire weather and fire danger conditions across Alberta.

As a Fire Weather Network Crew Member, your responsibilities will include:

• Supporting the site development, operation, and upkeep of the real-time automated fire weather network. This includes duties such as:
  • Assembling the trileg frame for the weather station.
  • Assembling the sensors on the weather station.
  • Preparing and maintaining the weather station site including mowing grass or clearing brush.
  • Pouring cement pads and footings for weather station equipment.
  • Shipping, receiving, inventory tracking and general labour for moving weather equipment.
• Providing field support for the maintenance and troubleshooting of the Alberta Wildfire Lightning Detection System.
• Providing maintenance and support for the radiosonde system.

Qualifications

• High school diploma supplemented with courses related to the position assignment; or equivalent as described below.
• Position start date as soon as possible.
• Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

*All Candidates must be 18 years of age or older as of June 12, 2025 or prior to their start date.

Additional requirements include:

• Basic experience using power tools to maintain and install weather and lightning stations, their components, and maintenance of a wide range of equipment (such as lawnmowers, generators, trimmers, trailers and assorted tools);
• Maintain a valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence and a suitable Driver’s Abstract;
• Ability to work weekends, evenings or available for standby as required
• This position will require extensive travel across Alberta with periods of possibility of multi-day overnight periods away from Edmonton.
• Many of the weather stations in Alberta are located in areas with no road access therefore there will be a requirement for the positions to be able to travel in a helicopter.

• Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System

Assets include:

• Experience working outdoors in various environmental conditions;
• Experience with navigation and global positioning systems
• Knowledge of Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and Regulations
• Knowledge of Working Alone Legislation, Occupational Health and Safety Act

This is a full-time, temporary seasonal wage opportunity located in Edmonton with an expected end date of September 30, 2025. This position works Monday to Friday, 8:15 AM - 4:30 PM, with possibility to work up to 36.25 hours a week.

What We Offer:

• Wage employees receive 11.2% in addition to regular wage earnings in lieu of paid holidays and vacation leave:
  • 5.2 percent of regular wage earnings instead of paid holidays
  • 6 percent of regular wage earnings instead of annual vacation pay.
• Shift differential and opportunity to work overtime, evening, and weekend shifts.
