Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking an intermediate Fire Protection Designer for one of our Atlantic offices. The role involves delivering fire protection projects, including designing sprinkler, special suppression, and fire alarm systems; conducting Fire Code analyses, Fire Hazard Assessments, and system testing/commissioning. The successful candidate will collaborate with team members and interact directly with clients on proposals and project delivery. Responsibilities include designing and executing projects across various sectors such as transit, data centers, industrial, healthcare, civic, commercial, and educational facilities. The role requires applying fire and life safety principles, assessing existing fire protection systems, and ensuring compliance with codes and standards. Tasks include performing design calculations, preparing reports, reviewing drawings and specifications, conducting site reviews, and advising clients on fire protection features. The position may also involve applying provincial and national building and fire codes related to hazardous materials.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Design fire protection, suppression, and detection systems.
  • Assess fire and life safety performance of new and existing systems using applicable codes and standards.
  • Prepare technical reports.
  • Draft fire protection systems and details using AutoCAD or markup designs with Bluebeam Revu.
  • Model fire protection systems using AutoDesk REVIT and RVT.
  • Perform design calculations with software like HydraCAD, AutoSprink, and RVT.
  • Participate in design reviews, shop drawing reviews, and site visits.
  • Conduct site audits and verify system performance and code conformance.
  • Review contract documents for code compliance.
  • Collaborate with project teams, contractors, and other disciplines.
  • Investigate and resolve design issues.
  • Gather data from site visits and review construction.
  • Prepare reports and technical communications.
  • Assist in project proposals and client communication.

Education & Experience

  • Degree in Engineering (fire safety/protection preferred, mechanical or electrical acceptable).
  • Alternatively, a Diploma in fire protection engineering technology, or mechanical/electrical engineering technology.
  • Minimum 4 years relevant experience, consulting or design experience preferred.
  • Experience in fire protection and alarm system design preferred.
  • Knowledge of fire dynamics, material behavior in fire, and human behavior in fire is desirable but not mandatory.
