Job summary

YVR is seeking a full-time Fire Prevention Officer to lead a proactive, risk-focused fire and life safety program at the airport. You will conduct inspections, review plans, and ensure compliance with essential codes while working with owners and stakeholders to resolve issues and strengthen safety practices.

You will support investigations, address complaints, and contribute to public education and training to build awareness across the airport community.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 years in a formal fire prevention role with interpretation and application of fire codes.

We’re hiring a full-time Fire Prevention Officer to help protect YVR and the Sea Island community by leading a proactive, risk-focused fire and life safety program. In this role, you’ll use your technical expertise to conduct inspections, identify hazards, review fire safety plans, and ensure compliance with essential codes and standards. You’ll work closely with building owners and stakeholders to resolve issues and strengthen safety practices.

You’ll also support incident investigations, address complaints, and contribute to public education and training that build awareness and resilience across the airport. With a focus on collaboration, professional judgement, and data-informed decision-making, you’ll play a key role in maintaining a safe, resilient YVR for everyone who depends on it.

Key responsibilities include:

• Maintain high-quality fire safety documentation by keeping audit-ready inspection and investigation records, analyzing program data, preparing reports, and reviewing building plans to ensure fire and life safety compliance.
• Support fire prevention operations through investigations, complaint resolution, public education, and contract compliance, while serving as a trusted technical resource and driving continuous, data-informed improvement.
• Lead proactive inspections across a wide range of facilities to identify hazards, assess fire protection and life safety systems, verify clear egress routes, and ensure compliance with codes, standards, and permit requirements.
• Respond to fire and life safety concerns by conducting timely investigations, documenting findings, and confirming corrective actions to maintain a safe airport environment.
• Enforce fire codes and standards through education, collaboration, and follow-up on violations, ensuring timely, risk-based compliance that protects life safety and supports airport operations.
• Promote fire safety awareness by delivering training, workshops, and outreach to tenants, employees, and community groups; supporting construction and renovation projects; and providing technical expertise during emergency response.
• Conduct and support fire investigations in alignment with provincial standards, including evidence collection, documentation, reporting to the Office of the Fire Commissioner, and coordination with external agencies.
• Collaborate across the airport community—including departments, tenants, airlines, contractors, and regulators—to resolve deficiencies, provide technical guidance on projects, and support integrated emergency planning and continuity-of-operations strategies.

Key qualifications include:

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in formal Fire Prevention role in relation to interpretation and application of National or Provincial BC Fire codes or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Completion of relevant technical education supported by formal fire service certifications such as NFPA 1030, NFPA 1033, BC Fire/Building Codes, special hazard suppression systems, Hazmat Awareness, and IC 200. Fire Officer II training is an asset
• Completion of Associate Certificates in Fire Protection Inspection & Testing or Mechanical Systems - Fire Protection is preferred.
• Holds a valid BC Driver’s License with a clear driver’s abstract (i.e., less than 6 points) and able to secure & maintain Airside Vehicle Operating Permit (AVOP) .
• Strong technical knowledge of fire codes, building codes, fire investigations, risk assessments, and compliance monitoring.
• Proficiency in digital tools, report writing, documentation, and Office of the Fire Commissioner reporting.
• Ongoing requirements for maintaining fitness level; maintaining all security clearances, passes and certifications; clear criminal record check; good attendance record; and other necessary requirements.
• Demonstrated skills in leadership, curriculum development, communication, teamwork, and maintaining effective relationships under pressure.
• Thrives in fast paced, dynamic environments with strong initiative, quick problem solving skills, keen risk awareness, and a commitment to delivering high quality, accurate work.
• A team player, capable of working both collaboratively and independently.

Given the airport’s 24/7 operations, shift schedules are established to meet operational needs. While regular schedules are planned in advance, occasional evening work or shift adjustments may be required, particularly to support Fire Prevention activities such as testing, maintenance, and inspections.

Although not required, French language skills are an asset as we are committed to providing bilingual services to our visitors and passengers.
