Inspects existing buildings and occupancies for compliance with the Nova Scotia Fire Safety Act and Regulations, as well as various Municipal By-laws.
Responsibilities include:
- Identifying and reporting inaccuracies in property data.
- Responding to public and staff complaints, conducting follow-up inspections for violations.
- Maintaining accurate records of all activities.
- Documenting evidence and representing HRFE during legal proceedings.
- Enforcing operational guidelines, occupational health and safety standards, rules, and policies for fire prevention operations.
- Reviewing and developing operational policies, recommending necessary changes.
- Maintaining regulatory appointments such as Municipal Fire Inspector, Local Assistant, and Special Constable.
- Informing building owners of non-compliance and taking corrective actions.
- Mentoring junior staff.
- Preparing long-form prosecution referrals.
- Staying current with construction standards and regulations.
- Responsible for health and safety under the Internal Responsibility System as per the Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Reviewing tender documents for compliance with Orders to Remedy.
- Preparing Orders or Notices for maintenance as required by law.
- Providing expert testimony at hearings or pursuant to the HRM Charter.
- Researching standards and reference documents from CSA, NFPA, CCMC, ULC, CGSB, etc.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Level 2 Fire Inspector Certification or Level 2 Building Official Diploma, with ability to obtain Fire Inspector Certification.
- Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience with Fire Safety Act, Building Code Act, or equivalent legislation.
- Combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Ability to inspect all buildings and structures per the National Building and Fire Codes.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Experience inspecting complex buildings (e.g., high-rise, industrial) is an asset.
