JOB OVERVIEW

The Mutual Fund & ETF Tax Analyst is responsible for supporting the tax operations, analysis and reporting requirements of mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The role combines fund tax/product knowledge with strong technical and data-analysis capabilities. The successful candidate will work with large volumes of financial and tax data, perform reconciliations and tax calculations, identify data anomalies, and develop efficient and automated solutions to improve the accuracy, scalability and control of fund tax processes. This position is particularly suited to an individual who is highly analytical, technically curious and interested in applying Excel, Power Query, SQL, Python, Power BI and automation tools within an investment management environment.

What you will do:
Fund Tax Analysis
  • Support the preparation and review of tax calculations for mutual funds and ETFs.
  • Assist with the analysis of investment income, capital gains and losses, distributions, expenses and other tax-related fund activity.
  • Support year-end tax processes, including distribution planning, tax reporting and investor tax information.
  • Analyse tax characteristics of securities and investment transactions, including equities, fixed income, derivatives and foreign investments.
  • Maintain and reconcile tax data used in fund-level calculations.
  • Assist with analysis of book-to-tax differences and other tax adjustments.
  • Support tax-related analysis for new funds, fund launches, mergers, terminations and other product events.
Tax Data Quality & Controls
  • Reconcile tax information between fund accounting records, custodians, tax systems and other data sources.
  • Investigate and resolve differences in positions, transactions, income, distributions and tax attributes.
  • Perform reasonability checks and trend analysis across funds.
  • Develop exception-based reporting that allows the team to focus on higher‑risk items rather than manually reviewing entire datasets.
  • Maintain evidence supporting tax calculations, reconciliations and reviews.
  • Support internal controls over tax reporting and tax‑related financial information.
Fund Tax Operations
  • Work with Fund Accounting, Investment Operations, Finance, Product, Legal and external service providers to support fund tax requirements.
  • Coordinate with fund administrators, custodians and external tax advisers to investigate tax‑related issues and data discrepancies.
  • Assist with requests from auditors and other internal or external stakeholders.
  • Support the implementation and testing of system changes affecting tax calculations or tax data.
  • Participate in projects designed to improve the fund tax operating model and increase automation.
What you will bring:
Core
  • Microsoft Excel, advanced level
  • Power Query
  • PivotTables and advanced formulas
  • Large dataset manipulation and reconciliation
  • Data validation and exception reporting
Highly desirable
  • SQL
  • Python, particularly pandas or similar data‑analysis libraries
  • Power BI
  • Power Pivot / data modelling
  • Microsoft Power Automate
Additional assets
  • Experience working with fund accounting, portfolio accounting, custody or investment management systems
  • Experience extracting data from databases or data warehouses
  • Understanding of APIs or structured data formats
  • Experience designing automated workflows and controls
  • Familiarity with artificial intelligence and Copilot‑enabled productivity tools
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business, economics, computer science, data analytics or a related discipline.
  • Approximately 2–5 years of relevant experience in investment management, fund accounting, fund administration, taxation, finance or financial data analysis preferred.
  • Exposure to mutual funds or ETFs would be an asset.
  • Canadian investment fund tax knowledge would be an asset, but candidates with strong financial data and technical skills who demonstrate an ability to learn fund taxation should also be considered.
  • CPA studies, CPA designation or relevant tax education would be an asset but are not necessarily required.
Key Competencies
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Exceptional comfort working with data and technology.
  • Ability to understand complex calculations and translate them into structured, repeatable processes.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify unusual results or data inconsistencies.
  • Ability to investigate issues independently and determine root causes.
  • Strong documentation and control mindset.
  • Ability to communicate technical or tax concepts clearly to non‑tax stakeholders.
