Job description

Position Overview

Reporting to the Senior Financial Officer, the Financial Specialist, Support Services, supports selected First Nation clients across Canada through remote accounting and ongoing training.

Accountabilities

  • Develop relationships with assigned clients with an approved Financial Administration Law (FAL) to promote, build trust, and secure buy-in for FAL implementation and FMS certification;
  • Collaborate with First Nation clients to conduct needs assessments for FMS Support Services and identify remote accounting and training opportunities;
  • Perform any other tasks assigned by the FMS Support Services management team;
  • Support First Nation FAL clients in achieving FMS certification by facilitating, empowering, motivating, and educating.

Remote Accounting Services

  • Develop a remote accounting service schedule with the client and FMS Senior Financial Officer based on the readiness assessment;
  • Assist clients with remote accounting support, including processing claims, verifying invoices, managing accounts, liaising with vendors, maintaining financial records, preparing financial statements, and other related tasks.

Training and Capacity Development

  • Develop a training plan with the FMS Senior Financial Officer based on initial needs assessment;
  • Deliver training on topics such as journal entries, budgeting, bank reconciliations, accounts payable/receivable, and financial reporting.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field;
  • CPA designation or progress towards it is an asset;
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in financial services, funding management, and internal controls;
  • Experience with information systems, ERP software, and Microsoft Office;
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP;
  • Experience with federal organizations and Indigenous cultures is an asset;
  • Fluent in English; additional languages are assets.

Working Conditions

  • Based in West Vancouver, BC, with remote or hybrid options;
  • Requires regional and national travel.
