About the Role:

The Controller is a key member of the Finance team, overseeing complex accounting functions across multiple legal entities and divisions. Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, this role ensures accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, effective budgeting, and strong internal controls while partnering with operational teams to enhance performance. The ideal candidate is analytical, detail-oriented, and thrives in a fast-paced, construction-focused environment with evolving priorities.

How you will contribute to the team

Duties & Responsibilities:

Core Accounting & Finance Operations

  • Oversee daily accounting and finance activities, including Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and Payroll.
  • Manage month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and preparation of financial statements (supporting both consolidated internal and external reporting).
  • Review internal financial reports for accuracy and completeness across multiple divisions.
  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure data integrity in compliance with ASPE.
  • Manage and reconcile intercompany transactions and balances.
  • Maintain key schedules for fixed assets, prepaids, accruals, and other financial components.
  • Lead weekly and monthly cash flow forecasting.

Regulatory Compliance & Audit

  • Ensure timely, accurate submission of regulatory filings (HST, WSIB, EHT, Income Tax, and other remittances).
  • Coordinate with external auditors, preparing audit schedules and year-end working papers.
  • Develop and implement company-wide accounting policies and procedures.
  • Document and maintain internal controls, ensuring compliance with financial policies.
  • Maintain corporate filings, registrations, and compliance with government regulations.

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Support the VP Finance in annual budgeting and periodic forecasting.
  • Perform variance analysis, identify key drivers, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Partner with department leaders to gather inputs and provide financial guidance.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on Vista by Viewpoint ERP, enhancing data quality and streamlining reporting.
  • Identify and implement process improvements and automation opportunities.
  • Participate in ERP implementations, upgrades, and data migrations.

Project & Construction Accounting

  • Collaborate with operations teams to review job cost reports and maintain accurate WIP schedules.
  • Oversee labour and equipment costing processes.
  • Analyze margin variances and cost allocations for construction projects.
  • Provide financial insights to support project forecasting and performance tracking.

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Act as a finance business partner to operations teams.
  • Mentor and support junior accounting staff.
  • Contribute to cross-functional initiatives to improve financial and operational performance.
  • Adhere to all company policies and undertake additional duties as required.
