Book Depot Inc. has an opportunity available for a permanent, full-time, Financial Controller at our Thorold head office and distribution center. The successful candidate will join our team of 4 Finance professionals. We are looking for someone who will be responsible for establishing and maintaining accounting standards, practices, and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements.

This position is responsible for managing the Finance team to ensure that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner. Responsibilities include assisting various departments with budget management, forecasting, preparation of journal entries, general ledger management, financial reporting, month-end and year-end closing, supervision of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll. The Controller works closely with the Vice President of Finance and the Senior Leadership Team, requiring strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

Strategic:

  • Contribute to strategic planning with the Senior Leadership team
  • Monitor operating cash flow to manage expenses and payments
  • Review Accounts Payable and Receivable turnover to maintain vendor relationships and collections
  • Lead customer satisfaction initiatives
  • Align team actions with company strategy to drive results
  • Ensure departmental adherence to budgets
  • Manage currency conversion transactions
  • Assist with financial modeling and analysis

Operational:

  • Ensure accurate monthly and year-end closing, including GL review, reconciliations, and remittances
  • Prepare and review financial statements and reports
  • Consolidate documentation for tax preparation
  • Advise staff on non-routine transactions
  • Implement new systems and processes to improve workflow
  • Support executive management with projects and process improvements
  • Monitor emerging technology for automation opportunities
  • Coordinate inter-company transactions
  • Communicate financial metrics and KPIs to leadership
  • Oversee payroll processes and controls
Functional:
  • Maintain understanding of financial reporting and general ledger structure
  • Provide staff training and development
  • Establish and monitor goals for staff
  • Manage daily accounting operations and backups
  • Review tax and payroll payments and reconciliations
  • Oversee vendor and customer invoicing and payments
  • Manage cash balances and credit management

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • CPA or CA designation preferred
  • 7-10 years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge of Sage 300 ERP, Sage 50, and ADP Payroll
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
  • Financial modeling skills a plus
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills
  • Knowledge of Canadian accounting standards and tax laws
  • Ability to motivate and lead teams, exercise discretion, and build relationships
