About the Role:

Reporting to the Director, Financial Accounting and Controller, the Financial Analyst facilitates accounting and decision support functions that support the vision and goals of the University in a fiscally responsible manner.

The Financial Analyst will:

  • Prepare documentation and working papers to support the financial statements in compliance with not-for-profit accounting standards;
  • Create detailed analysis of processes and devise actionable recommendations for implementation of improvement opportunities;
  • Ensure account reconciliations are completed in an accurate and timely manner and follow-up with various stakeholders to resolve any variances;
  • Support in the preparation and review of financial reports to support accurate and timely financial reporting;
  • Perform monthly accounting compliance reviews to ensure transactions are posted accurately and prepare any correcting entries required;
  • Assist departments across the University process journal entries using correct accounting worktags;
  • Conduct variance analysis on budget to actual comparison, investigate any significant variances, and provide value add recommendations;
  • Apply best practices and methodologies that drive process to objectives with efficiency and quality;
  • Research issues and develop recommendations to be applied in both financial reporting and business processes;
  • Support projects, process, and system improvement initiatives as assigned;
Please note: This position may require occasional overtime and irregular hours throughout the year to meet deadlines.

Key Skills and Experience:
  • Undergraduate degree in a related field and actively working towards either a CPA designation or MBA degree;
  • Experience with account reconciliations, reporting, and analysis;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial systems and Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations;
  • Well-developed writing skills sufficient to creatively and precisely articulate ideas and opinions that involve analysis, interpretation and assessment;
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office, with extensive knowledge of Excel;
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively with internal business partners;
  • Strong consultative and advisory skills, with the ability to tactfully and diplomatically, yet firmly affirm decisions;
  • Ability to establish and maintain sound working relationships with various key partners;
  • Ability to research issues and develop recommendations;
  • Ability to exercise good judgement, utilizing policies and procedures to determine the best solution while maintaining confidentiality.
Preferred or Asset Skills:
  • Experience with not-for-profit accounting standards is an asset;
  • Related public sector financial experience is strongly preferred.
Salary and Total Rewards:
  • Job Grade K, Salary Scale ($61,286-$99,384);
  • Target Hiring Range: $61,286-$65,000
  • This is a permanent position that includes:
  • Health & Dental Benefits: Comprehensive extended health, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Pension Plan: Enrollment eligibility in the Brock University Pension Plan.
  • Vacation: Up to 3 weeks per year, in addition to university holidays.

*The final salary is based on experience, internal equity, and budget considerations within the target hiring range.
