Job description

MATRIX is a national company providing camps, logistics and aviation management services to a diverse range of clients in the resource and service sectors, focusing on our people. This is an opportunity to utilize your expertise and experience in a challenging and dynamic work environment. MATRIX is a drug and alcohol-free company; with over 250 employees annually, we offer excellent career advancements for all skillsets.

MATRIX is seeking a Finance Operations & Automation Consultant to complete a project scope that will bring clarity, consistency, and efficiency to how we manage AP, AR, Payroll and other finance processes including their touchpoints with other departments (e.g. HR, Operation, etc). This is a contract role, not a permanent role — and best suited to a hands-on professional with excellent documentation, coaching, and systems improvement experience.

This position will identify areas for improvement within our company's financial processes, advise on optimization strategies, and implement solutions to enhance performance, efficiency, and compliance. Innovation, attention to detail, and resourcefulness will be key aspects to the success of this contract role.

Project Overview

Location: Osoyoos, BC (On-site, with travel/accommodation support provided).
Contract Length: ~60–80 hours initial scope (with potential extension).

Contract type: Preference for Full Time until scope complete, but some flexibility for right applicant.
Start Date: As soon as possible
Compensation: Hourly/project-based, to be quoted based on scope of work.

In this initial 60–80 hour contract, you will:

  1. Review and update SOPs and finance-related accountabilities for Payroll, AP, AR, Procurement, Project Management, and related functions.
  2. Identify inefficiencies and gaps in workflows — and propose practical, scalable improvements.
  3. Shadow finance team members to ensure process designs match reality.
  4. Create tools and checklists to help staff consistently apply those processes.
  5. Provide light coaching to help the team adopt and sustain improvements.
  6. Assess the usefulness of tools like QuickBooks Desktop, Dext, and Excel, and propose better-fit options for automation or workflow efficiency where appropriate.

You might be a Fit if you have:

  1. Proven past experience documenting SOPs and improving finance operations in dynamic, cross-functional environments.
  2. Familiarity with tools like QuickBooks Desktop, Dext, and Excel — and a proven background in automation projects (including understanding workflow builders and automation tools).
  3. A sharp eye for process improvement and ability to coach others through change.
  4. Experience across Payroll, AR/AP, PO management, job costing, and month-end workflows.
  5. Strong communication skills — both verbal and written — and the ability to translate financial needs for non-finance people.
  6. Bonus if you’ve worked in logistics, camp services, aviation, or other construction or resource related sectors.

Desirable skills and experience

  1. Assessment and Analysis:
    1. Evaluate current financial processes, systems, and controls.
    2. Identify inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and areas for improvement.
    3. Analyze workflows and assess opportunities for improvement.
  2. Strategy and Planning:
    1. Design and implement new processes and procedures.
    2. Create workflows, process maps, designs, and blueprints to improve operations and refine processes.
  3. Implementation and Support:
    1. Financial process documentation, data gathering, process design, and system configuration.
    2. Provide guidance and training on new workflows, procedures and processes.
    3. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented solutions.
  4. Collaboration and Communication:
    1. Collaborate with other Matrix finance team members and stakeholders.
    2. Communicate findings and recommendations clearly and concisely.
  5. Specific Areas of Focus:
    1. Optimize accounting efficiency.
    2. Improve internal controls.
    3. Streamline procurement, AP and AR processes.
    4. Enhance financial planning and analysis processes.
    5. Prepare detailed documentation – workflows, SOPs, work instructions, recommendations for future automation projects, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance is required.
  2. CPA or working towards CPA designation is preferred.
  3. 8+ years of progressive accounting experience with a portion of it being in a supervisory / consulting/ finance function effectiveness role.
  4. Thorough knowledge of Canadian GAAP.
  5. Excellent verbal and written communication abilities across all levels of an organization.
  6. Strong leadership skills with a dedication to driving and achieving results.
  7. Knowledge of employee relationship building and performance management techniques.
  8. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills. Experience with other financial systems.

You’ll work primarily on-site in Osoyoos, BC, primarily with Payroll and Finance but there may be a need to consult or collaborate with staff across Scheduling, Logistics and Operations.

MATRIX will coordinate accommodation, per diem allowance, and travel time compensation for the right consultant based in Western BC (e.g., Okanagan, West Kootenays, Lower Mainland).

This work lays the foundation for future phases that may include finance function automation, reporting improvements, and tool selection/configuration — ideal for a consultant who enjoys follow-through and seeing lasting impact.
