Finance Manager

Makonsag, a licensed childcare centre, is looking for a Finance Manager to join our team! As the Finance Manager, you will be responsible for the comptrollership function of Makonsag Aboriginal Head Start. The role includes managing budgets and variance reports, financial controls, preparation of related parts of the Main Estimates, developing financial policy, internal audits, providing financial administration advice, and managing specific financial and administrative systems. The Finance Manager is required to develop and implement financial policies and procedures in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for Not-for-Profit and Charity organizations. The position is a collaborative member of the senior management team, working with and providing support to all programs within Makonsag.

In this role, you will:
- Develop and maintain financial processes and documentation that allow the organization to make sound decisions for our multi-sited organization.
- Execute billing, receivables, payables, and general ledger functions. Oversee bi-weekly payroll time entry and T4 preparations.
- Work alongside the Executive Director to ensure timely preparation of the annual organizational operating and program budgets to support core administration and cash flow projections and forecasting.
- Ensure timely preparation of the budgets for approval by the Executive Director and Board of Directors. Collaborate with program managers on ongoing monitoring of budget-to-actual results and report on organizational performance relative to budgets (variance reporting).
- Prepare and present financial statements, summaries, and other financial analyses quarterly, annually, and as required by the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
- Ensure account reconciliations and journal entries are completed.
- Prepare schedules for financial review/annual audit.
- Work with external auditing firms to complete the annual audit.
- Communicate technical financial information effectively, orally and in writing, to stakeholders with a broad range of financial familiarity.
- Ensure compliance with regulations by aligning with best practices, financial operations, chart of accounts, values definition, budgeting, reporting, and internal controls.
- Lead and assist with designing, developing, implementing, maintaining, and modifying budgets, including multi-year cash flow projections.
- Analyze financial information and prepare reports for management and the Board of Directors to discuss the financial health of the organization.
- Oversee contribution agreements and familiarize yourself with their management.
- Act as the finance subject matter expert, advising the Executive Director, management team, and external stakeholders (e.g., auditors, banks, funders, partners).
- Manage monthly CWELCC system attendance reporting, including vacancies, operating capacity, and waitlist reporting.
- Set up payment information and automatic bi-weekly payment withdrawals for full-fee families.
To qualify for this role, you have:
- A university degree in Commerce, Business Administration, Finance, or a similar field.
- Three to five years of finance and non-profit financial management experience, preferably at a senior level.
- Standard First Aid certification, including infant and child CPR, or the ability to obtain it.
- A recent police record check (vulnerable sector).
- Up-to-date immunizations unless seeking exemption.
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination (Dose 1 & 2).
- Chartered Professional Accountant or Financial Planning and Analysis (CPA/FPA) designation is preferred.
- Knowledge of accounting theory, GAAP, and financial reporting requirements.
- Ability to prepare financial reports and analyses supporting accounts and contribution agreements.
- Proficiency in computer software applications (spreadsheet, database, statistical tools).
- Proven ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with team members, management, and families.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; knowledge of an Indigenous language is an asset.
