The Role: Medcan’s Finance and Accounting team is hiring a Senior Financial Analyst to join the team. This role is responsible for business partnering with product managers and various functional areas to help analyze profitability, make recommendations to management and build out new lines of business. The role will review month-end results, provide meaningful analysis and drive the development of financial forecasts and budgets. The ideal candidate is a designated accountant with extensive experience in financial reporting, FP&A, financial systems and preparing management presentations. The Accountabilities: Business Partnering and Financial Analysis
  • Assist management with monthly in-depth analysis of P&L accounts.
  • Provide value added input from findings in analysis i.e. opportunities for profit or process improvements.
  • Assist in the development and reporting of financial and non-financial key performance indicators for functional areas.
  • Provide monthly written analysis of select business performance versus budget, forecast and prior year.
  • Advanced Excel skills a must, as much of the analysis is Excel-based.
Budgeting and forecasting
  • Experience preparing PowerPoint presentations for management and Board of Directors.
  • Assist in the development of budget & forecasting models and be an integral part of the annual budgeting and quarterly re-forecasting processes.
  • Work with operational staff to ensure accurate forecasting assumptions.
  • Develop and provide management with a forecast model (and rolling model) for business performance. Leverage insights gained as a result of analysis to develop and continually improve driver-based modeling.
  • Produce PowerPoint board slides on financial performance and key performance indicators.
Systems Development & Business Process Improvement
  • Provide input and ideas that relate to the continuous improvement of the company’s accounting and information systems.
  • Design & develop financial & operational reports sourced from information systems (Workday, Adaptive Insights, Salesforce, PowerBI, etc.)
  • Provide ideas and improvements for daily processes.
  • Take leadership roles in finance driven initiatives and projects and report on their status and progress.
Financial Accounting
  • Various monthly & month-end related journal entries.
  • Year-end audit preparation and support.
  • Provide on-going account analysis to ensure proper charging of expenses and that internal controls are being adhered to.
  • Work individually and with other members of the finance team in the development and rollout of corporate accounting policies.
  • Ownership of various balance sheet accounts including monthly reconciliations, journal entries, analysis of activity, preparation of supporting schedules and reporting highlights to management.
  • Provide input for improving the general accounting processes on an on-going basis.
  • Routine and Ad Hoc Finance items for CEO
The Requirements:
  • CPA with 5+ years of relevant experience and a deep understanding of FP&A
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Ability to work well with others in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Proven ability to work directly with Senior Management and maintain a high degree of professionalism
  • Results oriented – ability to prioritize and consistently deliver on time with high level of accuracy
  • Outstanding problem-solving skills and able to identify unusual entries, discrepancies or problems, and resolve independently
  • Strong financial modeling skill and ability to manipulate large amounts of data with ease and present clarity to business user.
  • Hands-on experience with various accounting software packages – Workday and Adaptive Planning experience is an asset.
  • High degree of proficiency in MS Office Applications, most notably Excel and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively independently and as a team, with a passion for making continuous improvements
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate across all levels within, as well as outside the organization
The position is scheduled primarily during business hours Monday through Friday. The role reports to the Senior Manager, Financial Planning. The position will have a hybrid work set-up with opportunity to work from home and in the office at our 150 York St location in downtown Toronto.
