Job description

Film and Event Specialist, World Tour

Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity aims to inspire everyone who attends our campus—artists, leaders, and thinkers—to unleash their creative potential.

We acknowledge, with deep respect and gratitude, our home on the side of Sacred Buffalo Guardian Mountain. In the spirit of respect and truth, we honour and acknowledge the Banff area, known as “Minhrpa” (translated in Stoney Nakoda as “the waterfalls”), and the Treaty 7 territory and oral practices of the Îyârhe Nakoda (Stoney Nakoda)—comprising the Bearspaw, Chiniki, and Goodstoney Nations—as well as the Tsuut’ina First Nation and the Blackfoot Confederacy comprising the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai Nations. We also acknowledge the territories of the Shuswap Nations, Ktunaxa Nations, and Metis Nation of Alberta, Rockyview District 4. We recognize all Nations who live, work, and play here, helping us steward this land and honouring this place.

The Opportunity

The Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival is one of Banff Centre's flagship programs. As a renowned mountain festival and a co-founder of the International Alliance for Mountain Film, it has evolved over nearly 50 years from a one-day climbing film event into a nine-day celebration of Mountain Culture in Banff, Alberta. The festival features film screenings, competitions, workshops, a mountain marketplace, and a year-round World Tour.

Working closely with the Festival Manager, the World Tour Manager, and the Director, Festival & World Tour, this position provides logistical, administrative, and operational support for all film-related Mountain Culture programming associated with the World Tour.

Roles and Responsibilities

Reporting to the World Tour Manager, key accountabilities include:

Contacts & Communication

  • Providing exceptional customer service and problem-solving for internal and external clients, artists, participants, employees, residents, guests, and the public.
  • Acting as the primary communication link between the Festival and World Tour teams, production, and external groups such as filmmakers and sponsors, ensuring effective problem resolution.
  • Maintaining extensive external contacts with filmmakers, distributors, production companies, venue technicians, tour hosts, sponsors, and other festivals regarding film acquisition, content, and delivery.
  • Negotiating film licenses and entry fees, applying knowledge of festival rules and licensing procedures.
  • Using sound judgment, diplomacy, and conflict resolution skills in stakeholder communications.
  • Assisting in developing project timelines and overseeing their execution.

Film Programming & Production

  • Recruiting film programming from various sources and maintaining knowledge of industry trends.
  • Managing film data, coordinating technical conversions, and supporting program selection and execution.
  • Preparing licensing agreements, managing film screenings, and overseeing captioning and subtitling processes.
  • Coordinating logistics for pre-selection, screening, and post-festival follow-up.

Financial Responsibilities

  • Supporting budget adherence, processing payments, and monitoring expenditures.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements

  • Degree in business, film, event production, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years of administrative experience, preferably in a post-secondary or client service environment.
  • Skills in project scheduling, event planning, and familiarity with film festivals.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital platforms.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to changing priorities.

Special Requirements

Availability for flexible, irregular hours, including weekends during the festival period.

Employment Terms & Benefits

This is a unionized, salaried position with a 6-month probation, offering a salary between $56,388.80 and $59,196.80, plus benefits including health, pension, professional development, and more.

Application Process

Applications are accepted until June 15, 2025. Successful candidates must obtain a criminal record check and must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
