Job summary

Morskate Manufacturing seeks a Structural Steel Field Welder to join our field services installation team near Ponoka, Alberta. Travel is required and some stays may be hotels or rotating shifts for longer projects.

Ideal candidates are reliable, self-motivated welders who enjoy varied projects and can work independently in the field. Overtime and growth opportunities are available with a competitive wage.

Qualifications

  • 1–2 years welding experience minimum.
  • Apprenticeship program or CWB certification is an asset.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of metals and measurements.
  • Physically capable of lifting 50 lbs and working independently.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate and repair equipment, structures and metal objects using GMAW, GTAW and SMAW.
  • Install and erect steel; troubleshoot installation and solutions.
  • Analyze drawings and sketches for welding layouts and sequence.
  • Inspect welds and surfaces to meet standards.
  • Operate and maintain field trucks, tools and equipment.
  • Provide daily project updates to supervisor.

Morskate Manufacturing is a family-run structural steel manufacturer located just west of Highway 2 in Ponoka, Alberta. Specializing in structural, agricultural and custom orders, we take pride in the ability to be adaptable and flexible when designing and building orders to meet the customers exact requirements.

We’re expanding our facility by 90,000+ sq. ft. and investing in new technology as we continue to build our team and take on new projects. With this growth comes an exciting opportunity for a Structural Steel Field Welder to join our field services installation team.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys getting out of the shop and working on different projects and job sites.

Travel is required and depending on the location and scope of the project, you may be required to stay out of town in hotel for a few days, or on a rotation, if longer time is required.

Responsibilities
  • Fabricate and repair equipment, structures and various types of metal objects using an array of welding processes such as GMAW, GTAW and SMAW
  • Installation and erection of steel, troubleshooting installation and finding solutions
  • Analyze drawings, and sketches to determine measurements, layouts and sequence of welding assignments
  • Examine welds and surfaces to discover flaws to ensure they meet the required standards
  • Must be able to grind and finish parts to specification, operate drill press, grinder, power say & other hand tools.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of company trucks
    at all times to ensure a professional and safe work environment
  • Take responsibility for the care and proper use of field trucks, tools, equipment, and trailers, including safe storage and transport
  • Perform regular maintenance and basic troubleshooting on welding machines, tools, and equipment
    to ensure operational readiness and longevity
  • Provide daily updates to the Supervisor or Lead Hand
    on project progress, site issues, and equipment status to support clear communication and efficient workflow
  • Accurate use of square, levels, angle finder and other measuring tools related to specific area (Metric & Imperial)

Requirements/Qualifications
  • 1-2 years welding experience at minimum
  • Successful completion of a relevant apprenticeship program or CWB certification an asset
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, sketches, procedures and practices
  • Knowledge of materials and strong understanding of metals
  • Good with numbers in regard to accurate measurements, checking drawings, and weights
  • Must be physically fit and able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Able to work independently or as part of a team
  • Ability to speak, read, write and understand English clearly
  • Possess problem solving skills

We offer competitive starting wages between $26 – $40 per hour, with final rates determined by your experience, skill level, and how well you align with the role.
