Job summary

City Manager's Office Thunder Bay is seeking a Field Supervisor – Operations for the Transit Division. You will lead daily transit operations, supervise frontline staff, and ensure safe, reliable service in our community.

The role emphasizes coordination, risk management, and customer-focused delivery of transit services. The position requires relevant supervisory experience, a G-class driver’s license, and knowledge of municipal transit regulations.

Qualifications

  • Diploma/degree in business administration or related field with five years transit/municipal experience.
  • Secondary diploma with five years direct transit operations experience and municipal exposure.
  • Prior supervisory experience, preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Class ‘G’ driver’s license with a satisfactory abstract.
  • Knowledge of transit legislation and public sector processes.
  • Ability to think strategically in a public sector setting and implement change.
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports.

Responsibilities

  • Provide front-line operational leadership and field supervision to Transit Operators to ensure safe, efficient, customer-focused services.
  • Oversee deployment of staff and equipment; monitor on-road service levels to ensure service delivery targets.
  • Monitor adherence to time-sensitive schedules and adjust operations as needed.
  • Inspect transit infrastructure for defects, initiate corrective actions, review work by contracted services.
  • Monitor and control corporate risk; conduct workplace reviews and document conditions.
  • Respond to workplace incidents and emergencies; coordinate responses and document claims.
  • Ensure safety programs and procedures are audited and training is conducted.

Duties

As the Field Supervisor – Operations within the Transit Division, you’ll be at the heart of daily transit operations, providing leadership and support in a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same. You'll help ensure service reliability, support employee success, respond to operational and customer service challenges, and contribute to the safe and effective delivery of public transit throughout the community.

In this role, you will provide front-line operational leadership and field supervision to Transit Operators while helping ensure the delivery of safe, efficient, and customer-focused transit services. You will also have the following accountabilities:

  • Responsible for field supervision of Section staff including monitoring performance, coaching/mentoring, health & safety compliance, and risk assessment.
  • Participate in deployment of staff and equipment as required and monitors on-road service levels to ensure vehicles and personnel are operating to ensure delivery of superior customer service.
  • Monitor adherence to a highly time sensitive schedule and makes operational adjustments to maintain the proficiency of the service throughout the operating day.
  • Inspect and assess the transit system infrastructure for defects and hazards, initiate corrective actions, and review/report on work performed by contracted services.
  • Monitor and control corporate risk and liability. Patrol and complete workplace reviews including on-board vehicle evaluations, act on findings, document conditions and maintains detailed records.
  • Respond to workplace incidents and emergency situations including vehicle and passenger incidents; coordinate emergency service responses; investigate and prepare reports on claims for injury, damages, or complaints relating to incidents and takes appropriate action.
  • Ensure safety regulations, programs, and procedures are adhered to through audits and monitoring; coordinate/conduct training, tailgate and safety meetings.

Qualifications
  • Diploma in business administration, human resources, or a related discipline together with five years’ relevant experience performing duties related to the major responsibilities listed, preferably in the municipal sector; or
  • Secondary school diploma: together with five years’ of direct transit operations experience and one year of proven administrative, operations control, preferably in a municipal sector
  • Previous supervisory experience, preferably in a unionized environment
  • Possess and maintain a valid Class ‘G’ drivers license with satisfactory drivers abstract
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of industry related legislation, principles, and information technologies applicable to the public transit/passenger transportation environment.
  • Ability to think and act strategically in a public sector environment, including the ability to anticipate emerging priorities and conceptualize and implement change strategies
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, co-workers and the general public
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports
