Job summary

Festival Hydro is seeking a Distribution Engineer/Technologist to design and plan distribution systems, prepare materials and reports, and coordinate with contractors and municipal partners.

Qualifications

Distribution Engineer/Technologist

Festival Hydro is a local electricity distribution company proudly serving more than 22,000 customers across seven municipalities. This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager, and includes a comprehensive benefits package.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Create designs for new installations, rebuilds and upgrades of the distribution system meeting Company standards and other applicable codes, standards and regulations.
  • Design, estimate, and plan jobs, including preparing bills of materials for various projects.
  • Prepare technical reports including but not limited to voltage drop/line loss calculations, fault current analysis and protection coordination, power quality analysis, pole loading analysis, line tensions, and cable pulling calculations.
  • Review designs submitted by consultants and electricians, work with the Engineering Manager to initiate agreements to supply electrical service, and assist with design clarifications and recommendations.
  • Oversee and assist with design and drafting of new Festival Hydro distribution standards and procedures, and investigate, review, develop, communicate and enforce installation standards and materials specifications.
  • Prepare and oversee overhead and underground construction contracts, and administer contracts with consultants hired to augment workforce. Provide instruction to contractors, consultants and electricians to ensure the distribution system is installed to Festival Hydro specifications.
  • Assist in preparing annual Capital Budgets and budget proposals.
  • Maintain accurate records of assets and related field and office engineering records, and ensure all projects are in compliance with Ontario Regulation 22/04.
  • Develop systems for maintaining equipment records as part of the asset management plan and prepare reports on topics affecting the overall distribution system.
  • Assist in the subdivision design process, along with material approvals, for developer-designed and construction subdivisions.
  • Consult with customers and stakeholders regarding inquiries for existing and/or proposed infrastructure, and incorporate feedback into the planning process.
  • Review applications and permits for third-party attachments, including overhead attachments, to the distribution system, and assist with updating joint use attachment records and invoicing.
  • Analyze new material and work practices to confirm if they can be utilized to enhance the distribution system.
  • Prepare estimates for work to be completed for internal use and for servicing agreements to developers.
  • Make recommendations for the inventory of major equipment to meet the demands for new development, replacement and emergency situations.
  • Coordinate work with cities and municipalities within Festival Hydro service territory, and liaise with other utilities, developers, developers' consultants and government bodies for design, estimating, planning and permitting/approval purposes.
  • Visit and inspect job sites as required.
  • Provide technical advice, support and recommendations to other departments within the company.
  • Adhere to all Occupational Health & Safety Act rules and regulations, the EUSA rule book, Festival Hydro's work practices and Health & Safety Management System.
  • Assist the Engineering department with other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Completion of a 3-year Engineering Technology diploma or a 4-year Engineering Degree from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Registered as a Certified Engineering Technologist with O.A.C.E.T.T. or licensed Professional Engineer with PEO (or be eligible for registration).
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in overhead and underground distribution system design, planning, budgeting, and construction contract administration.
  • Extensive use and strong knowledge of design work and project management.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of electrical theory, and familiarity with power system operations, practices, and installation standards.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in AutoCAD and SPIDAcalc.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, and related computer software applications.
  • Experience in safety as it relates to design and job planning.
  • Valid Class 'G' Ontario Driver's Licence with an excellent driving record.
  • Effective communication skills (written, verbal, and presentation).
Compensation & Benefits

Salary Range: $94,265 - $117,500
