Job description

The Program

Taproot Community Support Services (formerly WJS Canada) works to improve the lives of person in their communities through a variety of programs and services.

The program also helps families and youth access community resources/programs (recreation, child care, employment supports and job coaching, addictions support, family counselling, etc.) and build a support network for future growth and success.

The Position

We are currently hiring for Family Support Worker 2 (FSWII) role, in a full time/permanent capacity.

Family Support Workers work directly with individuals, families, youth and children in and around the High Prairie area. Family Support Workers provide therapeutic interventions under the Signs of Safety model, by coordinating family care teams to provide support and ensure best outcomes for families.

Working a flexible schedule, the position will require the Family Support Worker to work regular office hours, as well as evening and weekend hours, up to 40 hours per week. Flexibility is required in order to support families during evenings and weekends when they are gathered together and require the most support.

**Qualification requirements deem this to be Family Support Worker level 2.**

In Your Role You Will

  • Provide flexible and responsive support to address children, youth, family or caregiver needs.
  • Oversee and manage service plan goals and objectives.
  • Provide care though individual program plans while respecting choices, decisions and needs of families.
  • Establish trusting relationships with families to assist them toward development of interpersonal communication skills, daily living skills, and other areas of interest.
  • Accommodate and respect cultural, social and religious heritage.
  • Collaborate and/or work as team with community systems (i.e. school), specialized service providers, volunteers and extended family members.
  • Conduct family visits in the community and is available for evening/weekend visits and/or on standby as required.
  • Prepare and submit reports as per specifications and deadlines.
  • Adhere to protocols that relate to abuse and appropriately reports safety concerns.
  • Advocate minimizing risks and promote opportunities to maximize and/or enhance community, family and individual support networks for individuals.
  • Represent Taproot with professionalism and respect within our communities.
  • Adhere to ethical/professional standards, perform all program activities in accordance with Taproot policies and procedures as well as program specific policies, Children and Family policies, accreditation and core standards
  • Prior to confirmation of employment, all applicants must provide a copy of a current Criminal Record Check and/or Government Screening Letter. These checks vary depending on province and sector and will be communicated by the Program Hiring Team.

As An Ideal Candidate You Possess

  • A diploma or degree in Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Early Childhood or related Social Sciences or Human Services or equivalent
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working with families. Understanding of Children’s Services, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and family dynamics.
  • Preference for applicants with strong Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit and Metis) cultural ties to the community.
  • Fluency in an Indigenous language (i.e. Cree) is an asset.
  • Previous experience in developing community events and projects to engage with youth and families, is desirable.
  • Suicide Intervention and Prevention Training and cultural sensitivity
  • Valid Alberta Driver’s License, with current and clean driving abstract
  • A reliable vehicle with appropriate insurance ($2million liability)
  • Ability to travel to/within High Prairie and Slave Lake area, and nearby communities, as well as, ability to provide transportation of clients
  • Valid First Aid / CPR Certificate
  • Experience working with computer software systems (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite, Case Management)
  • Highly motivated, and able to work independently
