Job description

Hours: 15 hours per weekend, with 3 weekends worked per calendar month. Rotating shifts include days (7:00am-3:00pm, 8:00am-4:00pm), afternoons (3:00pm-11:00pm, 4:00pm-12:00am), and nights (11:00pm-7:00am, 12:00am-8:00am). There is an opportunity to pick up additional hours across Family Centre programs as they become available. Some flexibility in work hours may be required.

How You Will Make An Impact

  1. Provide support to service users including assessment, intake, housing-based case management, crisis prevention and intervention, supportive counselling, education, advocacy, accompaniment to viewings and appointments, facilitating long-term housing success, and linkages with other community services.
  2. Perform residential tasks such as house laundry, cleaning common spaces, unit turnovers, unit inventory, unit inspections, and other tasks required for the safe and efficient operation of the program.
  3. Maintain the safety and security of the shelter by completing hourly facility checks, answering phones and doors, and weekly unit inspections.
  4. Recognize and appropriately respond to the unique barriers faced by service users.
  5. Respect and protect the confidentiality of service user information and other sensitive information related to the operation of the program.
  6. Observe all Good Shepherd health and safety rules and work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations to minimize risks to clients, staff, and others, as well as to property.

What You'll Bring To Our Team

  1. Post-secondary education in Social Services or a related field.
  2. Experience working in a residential setting is preferred.
  3. Minimum 1-year related experience in community outreach or emergency shelter, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience in Social Services or a related field.
  4. Knowledge of and experience working with issues impacting families such as homelessness, violence against women and children, immigration, poverty, mental illness, and substance use.
  5. Commitment to and experience working within a person-centered, trauma-informed, harm reduction, and housing-first framework.
  6. Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, verbal and written communication skills, and good time management and organizational abilities.
  7. Ability to work cooperatively within an interdisciplinary team.
  8. Experience with HIFIS & EMHware is an asset.
  9. CPR certification or willingness to obtain it.
  10. A valid G license is preferred.
  11. Fluency in a second language is an asset.
