Job description

Position Summary

The Family Services Social Worker provides trauma-informed, client-centered support to individuals and families accessing services through Mamas for Mamas. This role combines clinical social work practices with practical guidance through the family justice system, offering a blend of mental health support, system navigation, and advocacy.

The ideal candidate brings a strong understanding of family dynamics, poverty-related barriers, and the legal processes that impact caregivers. They will support clients through one-on-one meetings, case planning, community referrals, and court navigation—ensuring families feel empowered and never alone.

All social workers must be registered and in good standing with the British Columbia College of Social Workers and maintain a current criminal record check, renewed every two years in accordance with Mamas for Mamas policy.

Key Responsibilities

Client & Family Support

• Conduct client intakes and assess needs, strengths, and goals

• Develop and update Family Service Plans and safety plans as needed

• Provide emotional support and practical tools to navigate challenges like domestic violence, mental health concerns, or housing insecurity

• Support clients in developing life skills such as budgeting, time management, and parenting

• Respond to crisis situations and make appropriate referrals for emergency care or protective services

Court & Legal System Navigation

• Provide one-on-one and group-based support for families navigating Family Court

• Accompany clients to family court hearings, case conferences, and legal appointments

• Assist with paperwork, understanding legal language, and preparing for proceedings

• Advocate for client needs and ensure their rights are upheld within the legal process

Community Navigation & Advocacy

• Refer clients to community resources, including housing, financial assistance, legal aid, education, and mental health services

• Maintain a strong understanding of local and regional supports

• Build collaborative relationships with external service providers and justice system professionals

Documentation & Compliance

• Maintain accurate and confidential case notes, assessments, and follow-up documentation

• Enter client information into internal systems in alignment with organizational policy

• Adhere to all ethical, legal, and professional guidelines related to social work practice

Qualifications
