Falkland Islands - Dual Registered Nursing Sister/Midwife

The King Edward VII Memorial Hospital is looking for an experienced dual qualified registered midwife/nurse seeking work in a friendly and supportive team which provides excellent care for patients. The King Edward VII Memorial Hospital is the principal healthcare facility in the Falkland Islands, providing primary care and a broad range of elective and emergency secondary care services.

The hospital is well equipped with ambitious plans being developed to expand and upgrade facilities. Main duties of the job

Maternity care is provided by a small, friendly team comprising two midwives and GPs with additional postgraduate training in Obstetrics plus periodic input from visiting obstetricians. Both home birth and hospital birth are offered.Around 25 30 births are expected annually.

The local context is one in which midwifery care of the highest standard is able to be provided including continuity of care and responsiveness to the needs of the individual woman. There is considerable scope for clinician-led service development and innovation.

The hospital environment generally is one in which clinical staff have the time, resources, and support to provide the highest standards of care and to develop their careers. In addition to being supported to practise with a broad scope, clinical staff are encouraged and assisted to develop particular areas of clinical expertise.

We want to recruit the right applicants who will be currently registered with NMC or equivalent to fill the following post. Nursing Sister/Midwife dual qualified and registered, you will work in the nursing team alongside KEMH colleagues to provide nursing and midwifery care.

The Health and Social Services Directorate, Falkland Islands provides emergency, primary, secondary and community healthcare as well as social services assistance, support, and advice. Most health services are based at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) which is the Islands only hospital and is based in the capital Stanley. We serve the local community of about 3,700 residents, short-term residents and visitors.

Job responsibilities
  • Acting as a registered nurse and midwife work within the relevant scope of practice to facilitate care using Falkland Islands Government and Health Service guidelines however post holder will be expected to practice safely and make judgements from a range of facts and evolving situations requiring analysis of data which may not have a specific policy available.
  • Undertake direct patient care demonstrating competence, acting as a role model and ensuring any alteration in health is noted, care plans altered and deterioration recognised and acted upon in an appropriate and timely manner, including (but not exhaustively) taking part in/or being the lead in the cardiac arrest situation, giving care to patients in intensive care, providing care to people with mental health disorders, caring for patients of any age, sex, sexuality, religion, disability, race, background or place of origin, caring for a mother at any time in the ante, intra, and postnatal period contributing to the team approach of care.
  • Promote health by providing education to the patients and families on a one to one basis or with group work on healthy and safe lifestyles.
  • Promote safeguarding with close liaison with colleagues in the nursing and multidisciplinary team to ensure a clear pathway of care is made.
  • Liaise with the multidisciplinary teams and outside agencies about identified risks including consulting with overseas specialists or contributing to referral overseas in a planned, urgent or emergency situation.
  • Support patients, their families and the public equally with dignity and respect recognising diversity and demonstrating equality of opportunity with a rehabilitative approach or supporting a peaceful death.
  • Giving care to patients in intensive care, providing care to people with mental health disorders, caring for patients of any age background or place of origin from new-born to older age.
  • Provide care to patients throughout their care pathway demonstrating individualised patient care including at planned, urgent and emergency contacts providing care in hospital at home or at the scene of an emergency Identifying and managing risk.

  • Work in other aspects of the health service as appropriate including in times of staff escalation.
Person Specification
Experience
  • 7 years post registration experience, at least 2 years as a registered nurse and 5 years as a midwife
  • Sound experience in a variety of midwifery and nursing settings in order to be best able to meet the variety of issues that arise in the Islands
  • Uses English as if it were a first language
  • Good oral communicator including being able to break bad news effectively and act as the patients advocate
  • Good written communicator able to maintain records in line with FIG and health service guidelines and complete statutory reports as required
  • Able or willing to learn to use a computer with the Microsoft office suite and electronic patient records
  • Works with the intention that the team (both close colleagues and the wider health service) succeeds
  • Works and embraces the opportunity to process information from a variety of sources in order to make decisions not necessarily within expected guidelines and procedures policies etc and provide solutions within the restricted resources available and environment of the Falkland Islands Health Service
  • Able to act as a leader when required to lead a team in everyday as well as urgent and emergency situations
  • Able to work independently giving care, utilising support from other members of the wider team as needed
  • Able to work long and unsociable hours when required
  • Able to meet the on call commitments of two in three
  • Willing to fly in a light aircraft if required or with the RAF to overseas destinations in an emergency day or night
