Position Summary
BCIT’s School of Transportation is seeking a temporary, full time (1.0 FTE ) Faculty, Nautical Sciences who holds a TC Master 3000 GT / Master Mariner to deliver Transport Canada Accredited and non- accredited courses in our Nautical Department. The ideal candidate will be able to bring in Canadian and global marine industry experience into the classroom, workshop, or vessels; develop course and program curriculum; deal with relevant operational and educational issues; and cultivate positive relationships with students.
Duties & Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Classroom instruction to certificate upgraders, entry-level or Industry Services students, and Nautical Science cadets;
- Simulator, workshop, laboratory instruction and supervision;
- Active demonstration and instruction in areas related to Nautical Sciences; Instructional counseling, evaluation and preparation;
- Administrative responsibilities, including assignments, examination marking, and student evaluation;
- Curriculum maintenance and program enhancement;
- Administrative processes required to ensure appropriate resources are in place to deliver training, including Learning Hub course maintenance (online learning platform);
- Other duties directly related to the instruction of trades and vocational programs; Input into development of modifications to workshop and instructional areas.
- Preparing and presenting classroom lectures; classroom management; practical demonstrations, and working collectively with the Nautical Instructors and Department Head.
- Maintaining a commitment to the campus quality assurance standards per ISO 9001:2008 (2015).

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS :
- Canadian 3000 GT / Master Mariner Certificate of Competency (Unlimited)
- Experience working on the BC coast (Tugs / Ferries / relevant shore-based position) would be a significant asset.
- An undergraduate degree or Diploma in Nautical Sciences, including other marine related discipline would be an asset.
- Physical ability to work in and around vessels, rafts, davits and other lifesaving equipment including fast rescue boats, and bridge duties
- Demonstrated computer skills
- Solid communication skills (excellent command of the English language, both written and oral)
- Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills (Bridge Team Management/Bridge Resource Management)
- Completion of an instructional techniques course (Train the Trainer) or Provincial Instructor Diploma Program would be an asset.
