Job summary

City of Thunder Bay is seeking a qualified leader to support the Canada Games Complex Pool, supervising staff, coordinating programming, and ensuring safe, enjoyable swim experiences for the community.

The ideal candidate will have current lifeguard and aquatic certifications, proven staff supervision skills, and the ability to manage bookings, trainings, and compliance with health and safety standards. This is a full-time on-site role with weekend hours as needed.

Qualifications

  • Current certifications in CRCS/LSS, NLSS, First Aid CPR C, and Aquatic Supervisory Training.
  • Two years’ experience as head lifeguard or senior instructor.
  • Ability to lead staff, supervise, and ensure safety.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule staff and assist with supervision, including hiring, evaluation, and discipline.
  • Train staff to supervise safe, enjoyable swim programs and public relations.
  • Communicate and enforce codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Provide information, keep records, and report on the section.
  • Handle public inquiries and pool bookings.
  • Provide vacation relief for the Program Supervisor Aquatics.
  • Perform other related duties.

Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Program Supervisor CGC Aquatics, assists with the staffing, programming, and operation of the Canada Games Complex Pool.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for scheduling and assists with supervision of staff, including hiring, evaluation and discipline.
  • Provides staff with the necessary training to supervise a safe and enjoyable swim program, promote good public relations, and facilitate public need.
  • Ensures that all codes, standards, and regulations are clearly communicated and adhered to.
  • Provides information and reports, keeps records and makes recommendations on matters pertain to the section.
  • Receives and responds to public inquiries and requests, including pool bookings.
  • Provides vacation relief for the Program Supervisor Aquatics.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience:
  • Current certifications: CRCS/LSS Instructor, National Lifeguard Service, Standard First Aid CPR Level C, Aquatic Supervisory Training
  • Two years’ experience as a head lifeguard, senior instructor, or other related position
Skills/Abilities:
  • Ability to direct others and to issue and accurately comprehend written/oral information and instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to identify, understand,, and meet/exceed the requirements of internal and external customers
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to motivate and recognize staff
  • Self-starter with strong organization skills and the ability to work independently
  • Basic skill level in word processing and spreadsheet software
  • Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health & Safety Act
Assets:
  • NSPF Certified Pool Operator
  • First Aid Instructor and AED provider certification
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Must maintain all awards current from data of application until end of employment period
  • Must undergo a successful Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)
  • Must become certified as a First Aid and AED Instructor within 1 year of being hired
  • Will be required to work irregular hours and weekends
