Job summary

The City of Markham is seeking a dedicated Facility Maintenance Worker to support arenas, pools, and community spaces. Reporting to the Community Facility Supervisor, you will perform operations maintenance and repairs, ensuring programs run on schedule and safety protocols are followed.

Evenings and weekends are required. The role emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and customer service, with opportunities to work with a range of equipment and building systems in a dynamic municipal environment.

Qualifications

  • Secondary School diploma or equivalent with at least 1 year of recreational facility operations experience.
  • Experience operating an arena or commercial pool and related certifications (CPO or refrigeration) is preferred.
  • Ability to perform basic plumbing, electrical, and carpentry work.
  • Current Standard First Aid or CPR with AED.
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects and multi-task in a busy facility environment.

Responsibilities

  • Open/close the facility at scheduled times and coordinate with staff.
  • Notify supervisor of any staff or facility issues.
  • Operate arena resurfacing equipment and pool maintenance tools.
  • Perform cleaning/maintenance tasks (mopping, sweeping, washrooms, windows).
  • Use power tools and safety equipment; ensure patron safety and security.
  • Assist with scheduling and training of part-time staff; respond to patron requests.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Community Facility Supervisor, this position is responsible for facility operations maintenance and repair work related to arenas, community centres/halls, pools, change rooms (and cleaning of same) and any other assigned areas. This position oversees the facility to ensure programs/events run as scheduled and is responsible for the security and safety of the facility and its patrons.

Key Duties And Responsibilities


  • Ensures that the facility is opened and closed at the scheduled times.

  • Notifies Community Facility Supervisor regarding any staff or facility related issues.

  • Operates the ice re-surfacer (Zamboni, etc.) and other specialized equipment (edger, scissor lift, swing machines, ride on scrubber, etc.) and pool equipment (vacuums, etc.)

  • Performs general cleaning/maintenance (i.e. mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, window cleaning, washroom/ dressing room cleaning, snow shovelling, garbage pick up, detail cleaning, set-ups and breakdowns of tables and chairs).

  • Operates power tools, and cleaning and safety equipment.

  • Responds to requests from patrons (general public) and other City of Markham staff on a general facility issues and or maintenance requests.

  • Patrols the building looking for facility problems, safety hazards, or improper departmental operations.

  • Is responsible for the security of the building.

  • Ensures that all policies and procedures are being followed by patrons and part-time maintenance staff as applicable

  • Delegates and assigns job duties to part-time facility maintenance staff and follows-up, as required.

  • Adheres to corporate initiatives (i.e. recycling, energy management)

  • Utilizes computer systems (i.e. XPlor, Outlook, etc.)

  • Operates and monitors facility operation systems and records readings.

  • Assists in the required daily facility and equipment maintenance (i.e. painting, blade changes, etc.) with minimal supervision

  • Purchases supplies following department guidelines and submits VISA expenses reports. Completes purchase orders as required.

  • Ensures facility scheduling is ‘executed’ in a prompt and timely manner

  • Assists with training and supervision of part-time staff


Requirements


  • Secondary School diploma or equivalent experience plus as least one year experience in recreational facility operations and maintenance. Experience with associated materials, equipment operations, and maintenance procedures associated with a recreational facility environment.

  • Experience, working knowledge, demonstrated ability in operating and maintaining an arena or a commercial pool and one of the following certifications:

    • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Basic Refrigeration Certification



  • Ability to complete basic plumbing, electrical, and carpentry.

  • Current certifications in Standard First Aid OR Intermediate First Aid with CPR 'C' and AED

  • Excellent customer service, teamwork, organization skills are required as is the ability to multi-task and work with minimal supervision.

  • Must be physically able to perform the bona fide requirements of the job. This position involves occasional heavy lifting.

  • College diploma in Facility Management or Recreation and Leisure Management would be an asset

  • Certified Ice Technician/Certified Aquatic Technician would be an asset
