Description : About us :

The Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering is home to about 60 professors leading research on a very broad range of topics. On the Industrial Engineering side, research areas include Operations Research, Information Engineering, Human Factors, and Applied Machine Learning, all of which seek to improve the systems we as humans rely on to navigate our world. On the Mechanical Engineering side, research areas include Robotics, Mechanics & Design, Materials, and Thermofluids, topics that are applied to applications including manufacturing, energy production, and bioengineering.

We are also home to about 2,000 very talented students : about 1,300 undergraduates are enrolled in the Industrial Engineering and in the Mechanical Engineering BASc programs. We have about 350 Master of Engineering (MEng) students, a professional program for students taking courses with us for a year or two. And we have about 350 MASc and PhD students, who work individually on research projects with a particular professor.

Your opportunity :

As the Fabrication technician, you will have the opportunity to work with a team of highly skilled machinists and researchers, and contribute to the development of cutting-edge technologies that will shape the future of manufacturing, energy production, and bioengineering.

Reporting to the Machine Shop Manager, the Fabrication Technician designs, fabricates, installs, maintains, and repairs unique scientific devices, components and precision instruments for research purposes and undergraduate projects. The incumbent will work with state-of-the-art equipment in the department's machine shop, utilizing Waterjet, CNC Brake Press, Laser Cutting, Welding and other fabrication equipment to create custom projects that support and enable groundbreaking research at the faculty.

Your responsibilities will include :

  • Designing, modifying and fabricating custom machine parts.
  • Applying established standards when operating fabrication equipment.
  • Creating and reviewing technical drawing sets for manufacturing.
  • Verifying the accuracy of design requirements.
  • Determining work priorities based on knowledge of deadlines.
  • Keeping well-informed on current technologies, best practices and industry standards.
  • Preparing, assembling and setting-up material, equipment and supplies according to the needs of the facility.
  • Checking to ensure equipment is in working order.

Essential Qualifications :

  • College Diploma (2 years) or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum three years of relevant fabrication and design experience. This might have been gained through a role in co-operative education, or summer employment in a fabrication shop / facility.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sheet metal part design and manufacturing methods.
  • Ability to work from mechanical drawings, client specifications, and oral or written instructions.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with manual and powered / energized resources.
  • Ability to exercise judgement in determining the techniques and methods used.
  • Solidworks CAD modeling and drawing training in a formal setting such as College or through certified Solidworks training courses.
  • Must have basic machinist hand tools for measuring and assembly.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and the promotion of a respectful and collegial work environment.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills (verbal and written), and ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups, including students, faculty, staff.
  • Demonstrated interest in broadening knowledge in techniques / tools and materials and a motivated learner.

Assets (Nonessential) :

  • Knowledge and / or experience of working / programing of Cobots.
  • Knowledge and / or experience with TIG, MIG or spot welding.
  • Knowledge and / or experience of Additive manufacturing.
