PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

As a member of the Engineering team, a Track Labourer in the railroad industry plays a vital role in the maintenance, repair, and construction of railway tracks to ensure safe and efficient train operations. No previous railroad experience is required! In this role you will follow the guidelines set forth by the Transport Canada and CPKC. This is a travelling position where your typical schedule will be 8 on/6 off, 7 on/7 off or 4 on/3 off. As a part of the Production crew, you will travel across the territory. CPKC will cover the cost of hotel accommodations, meal and mileage expenses.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Replacing and repairing various track defects, installing railway ties, and spikes
  • Utilizing hand tools (shovels, axes, hammers, etc.)
  • Clearing brush and debris, maintaining drainage, and ensuring safety along the tracks
  • Responding to emergencies and track outages
  • Operating company vehicles on as need basis
  • The work location is outdoors and, therefore, you will be working in all weather conditions (rain, direct sunlight, snow etc.)
  • This position works shifts; start times are set on a weekly basis and may change daily if required, daily work shifts can start at any time, night or day
  • Work can be seasonal, and employees may be laid off at the end of the work season. Employees will be called back as needed (and in seniority order) for the next work season

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or general equivalencyMust be at least 18 years of age
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Standing, lifting, squatting for long periods and the ability to lift 50lbs or greater
  • Ability to travel
  • Mechanical proficiency
  • Work up to 12-hour shifts which include days, evenings, overnight, weekends and holidays
  • Strong communication skills (provide clear and concise instructions/directions including over radio)
  • Must be able to pass the required physical job tasks for the job position, written examinations, read and understand safety instructions, read and understand operating rules and regulations and other written or printed material in English

Medical and Drug Testing

This is a safety sensitive position and a successful pre-employment medical assessment including physical, vision, hearing, and a negative company drug test is required. Post hire qualification drug testing may also be required.
