Job summary

A healthcare organization in Ontario is seeking an Extern Coordinator to support the onboarding and education of Externs and Internationally Educated Nurses. The candidate must be a Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse with substantial experience in acute care, and excellent communication and leadership skills are essential. Job description

OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Manager, Nursing and HHR Workforce Initiatives, the Extern Coordinator supports the planning, onboarding, orientation, education, and integration of Externs and Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) completing their Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP) within the model of care at Michael Garron Hospital.

This is a temporary full-time contract position ending on March 31, 2026, with the possibility of extension.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supports training, integration, and development of Externs and IENs at organizational and unit levels.
  • Contributes to onboarding, ongoing education, and practice development within the scope of the Extern and IEN roles.
  • Creates, adapts, and delivers orientation and learning resources using various methods in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Assists in developing, implementing, and evaluating the Extern and IEN roles in collaboration with extern leadership.
  • Helps Externs and IENs become familiar with their practice areas.
  • Collaborates with unit teams to support Externs and IENs in providing patient care.
  • Provides ongoing presence on clinical units to support education and development.
  • Supports preceptors and primary nurses to promote success and satisfaction among Externs and IENs.
  • Serves as a liaison between unit leadership, program leadership, Professional Practice, and Operations.
  • Supports program evaluation in collaboration with professional practice leaders and unit management.

EDUCATION

  • Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Master’s degree in nursing or education (or in progress) is an asset.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certificate required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Patient- and Family-Centered approach to clinical practice.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
  • Interest in and experience with mentoring, preceptorship, and adult learning.
  • Previous teaching experience (preceptor, clinical instructor, faculty advisor, or course instructor) preferred.
  • Commitment to continuous learning, evidence-based practice, and clinical excellence.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in acute care settings such as medicine, surgery, mental health, maternal-newborn, or emergency care preferred.
  • Good work and attendance record required.
