Job Summary

The Expert Track Standards Engineer is responsible for leading technical aspects of track standards for the railway organization. The role is accountable for developing and maintaining technical standards for rail tracks to ensure safety and efficiency. Additionally, the role signs off on custom special track work and leading new material qualification reviews. Furthermore, the position provides technical guidance to Field Inspectors to ensure that standards are being met.

Main Responsibilities

Track Standards

· Lead thetechnicalreview and approval of special track work

· Lead new material testing and qualification processes

· Represent CN on the American Railway Engineering and maintenance of Way (AREMA) Technical Committees

· Draft and revise Track Standards plans using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software

· Assist in the modernization of the Track Standards documents

· Assist in the update of Track Standards plans and recommended methods

· Conduct research on industry best practices

· Work with other departments to ensure new technologies and practices are incorporated to the scope of internal standards

· Maintain the Track Standards section of the Engineering SharePoint to ensure

up-to-date communication with the field

Materials Testing and Acceptance

· Create and maintain testing procedures to ensure that all materials to be used in the Engineering capacity meet standards and regulations

· Work with vendors and suppliers to establish test programs for potential new materials to be used

· Conduct field sign off of special track work including diamonds before being released from vendors

· Technical point of contact between vendors, supply management, and Engineering

· Conduct regular reviews and evaluations of test sites

· Provide technical reports to be reviewed and make the determination if specified material will be approved for use

· Explore emerging technologies that can be adopted

Engineering Processes

· Collaborate with other departments and stakeholders to identify data-driven solutions to improve efficiencies

· Innovate ways technologies and data can be leveraged to improve safety, production, and reduce costs

· Analyze emerging trends from Automated Train Inspection (ATIP) and other data sources to identify improvements to processes and standards which can be adopted by field forces

Regulatory and Compliance Review

· Assist in derailment investigations

· Assist in writing Engineering Track Standards Policies

· Engage with field forces to ensure all regulatory and standards changes are communicated

Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role requires minimal travel (20%) across the network. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.

Experience

Railway Design Engineer

· Minimum 10 years of railway experience

· Minimum 5 years of relevant technical design experience

Education/Certification/Designation

· Bachelor's Degree in Engineering

· Professional Engineer Designation (P.Eng.)*

*Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset
